Seconded.

"A place for everything and everything in its place."

Usually the floor.

But a large part of "neatness" involves how much horizontal you got.

That is probably the key to cleaning up.  Clear off all the horizontal spaces and put the stuff away somewhere.  I need to do that one of these days.   =)

I used to be pretty hard core about "a place for everything and everything in it's place". I've been married for 40 years next month, I gave up that fight probably 20 years or so ago. If my wife doesn't approve of where I put something she "puts it away" for me.  About the only thing she won't "put away" is a gun.  One exception she made to that was a little cheap 1911 style CO2 pistol I used to keep by the back door to pot at garden vermin. She "put it away". Haven't seen it in years. Found the CO2 cartridges a few years ago, and the BBs sometime after that. she has no idea where she put the pistol but they were all together before she "put it away"
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Try putting away her favorite pair of shoes.

No wait, that's a lose-lose proposition. I take it back.

Hey, who said that?

I am somewhat organized about most things but I also leave a lot of things laying around if I plan to need them again soon.
My organizational strategy and my wife’s are a lot different. She will sometimes “put it away” in a place I would never consider. She is not allowed to reorganize any of my shooting stuff.
There is a room in my basement with guns ammo lots of reloading stuff etc. if she comes across a holster or a stray box of shells etc she will enter what she calls “the bullet hole” and leave it on the chair.
Clothes are her thing. We have his and hers walk in closets in the master suite. She must reorganize both at least 2x per week. If I can’t find something I ask her.
What we have here is failure to communicate.

SWMBO and I are polar opposites in this respect. I have a place for everything and am obsessive about it going back where it belongs. If I don't have my glasses on, they are guaranteed to be in one of three places. Keys, wallet, and pocket detritus all go in the same spot in my dresser and nowhere else. I don't even take them out of my pocket until I'm standing in front of the dresser with the drawer open. Dirty clothes? Hamper and hamper only. Same story for tools, appliances, remotes, etc.. One of my biggest peeves is going to where something is supposed to be and it not being there.

SWMBO, on the other hand, is pretty much a "first flat surface" type. When she's done with something it goes on the first flat surface. We are forever trying to find her phone, keys, glasses, or purse. She regularly loses the TV remote in the bed covers, under pillows, or fallen behind the headboard. I've lost count of how many flashlights I've put in her car console. I buy her lip balm sticks by the case. It's nothing to find four or five of them in the couch, behind the headboard, under her car seat... pretty much anywhere something can fall, roll, or scoot.

Hey, it's part of being married. We just point at each other and laugh.

I can work in a clutter and often do but it hate myself, eventually snap and clean everything up. Then go right back to setting the wrench down right where I stopped using it. Rebellion I guess. My dad has a place for everything. Granted some are a mess now but I bet you if I can remember where it was in 1983 it is still there. Then there was a life fixing airplanes when cleaning was obsessive and every tool had an exact place in a drawer and was checked daily.

I haven't been married to this wife as long as you, but I think somehow you married my wife.

I come from people with zero organizational skills who love clutter and I force myself at work to be a lot better with tool organization and storage. Home life my wife keeps everything neat and uncluttered and I’ve well adapted to that.

There's a guy at work who labels EVERYTHING. And the warehouse area shelves are such that if I want to shelve a new item, I have to move everything after that Item over one. Because he doesn't build in "air" to expand. So we have empty shelves at the end of a run...
