Android help needed
« on: May 17, 2022, 01:03:10 AM »
I have an Android tablet. I have Word and Excel on it, and I also have another office suite installed, Softmaker Office for Android. (SoftMaker Office is an excellent substitute for Microsoft Office, and it's affordable.)

The problem I have is that I have a lot of documents that don't use Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri as the font. So when I open those documents on the Android tablet, the display and formatting get whacked because the fonts I used aren't available on the Android device. I've Googled how to install fonts for Android, but it seems all the articles are about installing fonts for the Android operating system -- so the menus and such can use a different font -- rather than installing fonts that the office suite programs can use.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Any help to be found here?

https://forum.softmaker.com/viewtopic.php?t=19299

Or here?

https://forum.softmaker.com/viewtopic.php?t=14075

No joy. Those threads address Windoze and Linux, but the question about Android didn't receive a relevant answer.

The only suggestion I have found anywhere that seems to have worked for someone is to create a document in Word for Windows that uses the fonts I need to install, save it with the fonts embedded, then open it using SoftMaker TextMaker on the Android device. That's supposed to magically make the embedded fonts available for posterity. Haven't had time to try that solution yet. Seems a bit sketchy.

Are these documents you authored, or are they something you imported?

This is kind of what PDF was designed for.

That doesn't help much for editing documents, of course.  But I don't think wanting to edit documents on an android device is a very common ask.

I have had people email me .docx documents.  I think I let outlook web access do a preview thing that dealt with parsing it on my tablet.

I don't have any particular document to worry about at the moment, but in general this would be about documents I author. It's just a question of being able to open any document I want to work on, on any device I happen to have handy at the moment. The fact that Android makes it almost impossible to install fonts that programs such as office suites can use is incredibly annoying.

What a fluster ___.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/how-to-add-a-font-to-microsoft-word-on-an-android/0954c528-44aa-4676-a12a-ff920b184bc0

To get them in, I had to create a document that included the fonts I want to import. Then I had to find a place where I could save that file on the PC and which is also available from the Android tablet. Had to set Word to embed fonts before saving. Then open the document in Word on the tablet, and the fonts somehow magically install themselves.

It's arcane, but the font I wanted to import are now available to SoftMaker Office on the tablet.
