My white daddy picked cotton when he was eight years old.  Fortunately, I have not!  In his basement he had an old cotton sack- he showed me how the strap was tied short so a child could use it.

I recall an older (white) substitute teacher I had in high school many years ago. We had some cotton bolls as a decoration in class.  She actually had a negative reaction to them, since she had to pick them as a kid!
My grandfather said he and his brothers would pick cotton in the summers for extra money.  I think the parents got the money for shoes and stuff.

I don't think a combine to pick cotton was widely used until later.

I seem to recall reading that kraut POWs in WW2 picked a lot of cotton. I also recall stories of them enjoying being outside doing so. My dad was in a British POW camp at the end of the war where, as a scrawny 17 year old, he got beat up every day. He would have enjoyed the "picking cotton" alternative. I guess it's all in the perspective.

Why did I think he actually died?

Thankfully I can’t tell you why you thought something.

He just for whatever reasons he had stepped away from both this forum and the FB side of APS.  However I’m in regular touch with him.  He’s still kicking.

That's a big relief.

The impression I get from the woman who's triggered by cotton is that she really seemed to think cotton was only grown for the purpose of making blacks miserable. Zero awareness that cotton is how some people make their living, and how all of us avoid being completely naked.

That explains why everyone looks at me funny when I go to the hardware store.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

One of the local hardware store chains had this jingle: "We've got it all, from scoop to nuts, Central Hardware!"
