Leather Furniture Cleaner?
« on: May 01, 2023, 09:05:27 AM »
Any recommendations on good leather furniture cleaners/conditioners?

Most of what I see on Amazon seems to be from companies known for car care and geared towards cars, though I guess maybe there's not much difference between home furniture and car seats?

3M used to make "Scotchgard Leather Protector" spray which was superb . . . but I guess it was too good so it got discontinued.  =(

This is what came with my La-Z-Boy leather recliner several years ago - it seems to work pretty well on my chair:

A little searching didn't turn up any current sources for this product, so it may be discontinued. Amazon has what seems to be a very similar product (at least according to some reviewers) under the GUARDSMAN name. The blurb at AMAZON says they've been around since 1915, so maybe it's worth trying.

Smooth leather? Car care section.
McGuires gold class leather cleaner/conditioner
Or Mothers VLR (vinyl leather rubber)
Or you can use traditional saddle soap and a conditioner like Bic 4, etc

Suede? Sorry can’t help you

My leather motorcycle gear gets saddle soap and pure neatsfoot oil. Anything with silicone will dry it out.
A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.

I use neatsfoot oil on "kit," but I don't think I'd use it on furniture.

Neatsfoot oil isn't really recommended for leather.

None of that has happened to my grandfather's flight jacket from WW2. Saddlesoap and neatsfoot is all it's ever seen.

The problem with neatsfoot oil is that often, it's not pure neatsfoot oil, and that makes a huge difference to the life of the leather. Depending on where it was sourced, God knows what you're going to get in it.

I've seen a lot of damage done to leather goods by people using what they think is the right cleaners, including neatsfoot oil.

I prefer either Leather Honey or Weiman's products. I've had very good success with both of those products over the years. Lexol is also OK.

I hate mislabeled products - "tung oil" wood finishes that often don't have any tung oil at all, "boiled linseed oil" that isn't boiled, but rather has heavy metal compounds added to aid drying, "original" products that have different ingredients than when they were first introduced . . . even today's Coca-Cola isn't what it was back in the day.  ;)

In 1968 my grandfather gave me a new catcher's mit and a can of real "Triple X" brand neetsfoot oil (and instructions on proper break in)
I still have the empty metal can (because I think it looks cool and I have the memory- grandpa died suddenly just weeks later) and the contents are NOT the same as the newer plastic bottle I have in the garage.
The glove was in excellent shape until mice took a liking to part of it but the leather was still mostly wonderful.

I have used Weiman Leather Conditioning Cream (Amazon) on leather furniture and been pretty happy with it.

Looking at reviews, I've been narrowing it down to the above mentioned Weiman's and Leather Honey. One thing I did see in the negative reviews of the Leather Honey is that it overly darkened the leather.

I actually have one spot on my recliner where the leather looks a little lighter, right where my head goes, which I guess is oils from my bald head. So maybe something that darkens a little wouldn't be bad there if it darkens to the original color versus some other shade of brown.

This is the neatsfoot oil I've used for decades:  https://fiebing.com/product/pure-neatsfoot-oil/

This has silicone in it, and is bad for leather:  https://fiebing.com/product/prime-neatsfoot-oil-compound/
