Florida gets its share of contenders for the title of America's dumbest criminals. One guy last year tried selling crack cocaine to an Orange County deputy in full uniform.
Now an Orlando teen sits in the Orange County Jail, accused of leaving his calling card, so to speak, at the scene of the crime.
"Obviously, he wasn't a member of the Mensa society," said sheriff's Cpl. Susan Soto, referring to the high-IQ group.
The jeering was spurred by Monday's armed robbery of $75 and two cartons of menthol smokes by a masked bandit on South Orange Blossom Trail.
At the Hess gas station, someone noticed that the suspect left behind a gun case leaning against a display rack. Inside, deputies found a receipt for a new AK-47 assault rifle from a nearby gun shop, arrest records show.
The $439 bill from Universal Weapons was made out to Eric Cunningham and listed his address in a gated Hunter's Creek community, according to interviews with the gun shop and deputies.
Using that clue, deputies drove less than 21/2 miles to the residence on Summit Creek Boulevard. There they found Cunningham, an 18-year-old son of a retired New York City police officer, with a loaded 30-shot assault rifle and a pistol-grip shotgun, records show.
Robbery detectives charged Cunningham with armed robbery with a firearm while wearing a mask. He remains jailed without bail and faces pending charges in two other incidents, according to the Sheriff's Office.
