Monitor recommendations?
« on: November 29, 2023, 12:36:10 AM »
I need advice. I just set up a new Dell 27-inch monitor in my home office, moving up from a 24-inch. Problem: the new monitor is the same 1920 x 1080 resolution as the old, smaller monitor. I expected that this would mean the new display would be a bit grainier, but it's much worse than I had anticipated. I'm still withing the return period, so I think I'll probably box it up and send it back.

Then I need to find something to replace it. Until now I have been happy with Dell monitors, but this one has been a disappointment and I see a lot of negative reviews for Dell monitors on Amazon. I guess I should be looking at the next step up in screen resolution, so would that be 2560 x 1440? Who makes decent monitors with that resolution at an affordable price?

And I would prefer to get one that uses a standard power cord. Apparently at least some Viewsonics don't have an internal transformer, they use an external power brick. Not interested in one like that.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

It sounds like something is wrong with either the monitor or your graphics card setup. I've been using a 32" Samsung television as a monitor for years - it's a model UN32EH5000FXZA, which has probably been superseded a couple of times since I got it. It's a full HDTV meaning it's 1920 x 1080, and it looks pretty sharp to me, not grainy at all.

If you want something sharper, Samsung makes a 32" 4k tv. (Assuming your graphics card is up to the task.)

I tend to agree with Hank.

I'm staring at a 27" Dell monitor running in 1080P (1920x1080) and it's not the least bit grainy.  I have several landscape and nature wallpapers that I use, and watch videos on it routinely.

Something is off in your settings.

Monitor will have a built in menu.  Get in that, and try to find an autoconfigure setting.

If you're using VGA, try HDMI or DP instead, whichever your computer supports.

When I went from a 23" 1080p monitor to a 27" 1080p it was a bit jarring at first due to the pixels being a bit enlarged but I soon got use to it.
Current setup is a 32" 4k as the main with the older 27 as a 2nd.

Another vote for something up beyond just monitor resolution. Until a few months ago my desktop consisted of three dell 1920x1080 monitors. They were clear and sharp. First and foremost, check the easy stuff - reseat all your connections and/or swap cables. Also, update your video card drivers.

If you want a recommendation, go with Dell UltraSharp. Have three of them in my new work setup and they are very nice.

For home, I always looked at resolution and refresh rate aside from trying to stick with known brands.  I use a lot of Dell monitors at work and they are excellent.

Main issue at work is making sure the video plugs available on the monitor match what I need.  Too many older computers or KVM adapters that only use DVI connections and such like that.  I think most everything today uses HDMI plugs or Display port plugs.

This one. Three turrets give better overall resolution.
