"Why I am now a Christian" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
« on: November 18, 2023, 08:08:42 PM »
Well, this is interesting.  Many of you may remember her- a former Muslim who turned to atheism, and became a pro-Western intellectual.  I had heard that she had developed an interest in Christianity and Judaism, and it looks like she is really taking it seriously... not only as a "weapon" against radical Islam, but also to develop a meaning in life.

Time will tell.

Quote
That is why I no longer consider myself a Muslim apostate, but a lapsed atheist. Of course, I still have a great deal to learn about Christianity. I discover a little more at church each Sunday. But I have recognised, in my own long journey through a wilderness of fear and self-doubt, that there is a better way to manage the challenges of existence than either Islam or unbelief had to offer.

Ditto.

My high suspicion (as opposed to my usual low suspicion) is that people who write things like that are trying to convince themselves.  Not knocking her, just offering that as a possible fact.

Oh!  Almost forgot!  There's the pecuniary motive, too. (ETA for clarity: with respect to the book's selling.)

Hope she remembers there's a 10% tithing recommendation as well, if she's prosing and conning.

Depends on who you talk to.  The non-denominational Church I grew up with always held that it wasn't correct to oblige anyone to give money.  If they teach God's Word correct, God will motivate people to give.  Worked for them so far.

^ I know, that's why I used the word "recommendation."  The Pastor of my rather fundamentalist church (long ago) used to request "silent collections" for special circumstances (like buying the lot next door for extra parking.)

The sermon at those times was usually related to "building your treasures in Heaven" and the accompanying "lilies of the field" discussion (Mat 6:19-34).
