Go-Thru Socket Sets?
« on: August 24, 2024, 08:15:06 AM »
Okay, I'm a dummy and didn't even know these existed, but ran across this as I'm stopping by the HF today to take advantage of the 40% off Icon ratchets. It seems like this is mostly a deep socket alternative?

I was thinking the value for me would be getting into tight places, which I have problems with on practically all my equipment around here. Is there an advantage to using these for that over something like  ratchet wrenches (which I already have)?

Not in my experience, not really.

They both do basically the same thing.  If anything I find ratcheting wrenches better, because they are slimmer.

The only nice thing about the pass through sockets is they tend to be 6 point, and sometimes on worn or really stuck/rusty nuts a six point will get it to turn where a 12 point will round it off.

Okay, thanks. I don't even know when I got them, but I have a ton of six point sockets, so I'm already good there. I'll stick with the wrenches.

Agree that ratcheting wrenches are generally a better product for tight places.

The go through sockets are useful in some applications, but I've not found any situation where having one would have made the difference to the project I was working on at the time.

IMHO would eliminate the need for having both regular and deep well sockets which is especially important in a small tool box

Yeah, but that ratchet head is bigger than either a deep well socket poking into something, or a ratchet wrench...

I love my 6 point sockets. I don't round stuff off. But I carry a 12 point 10mm ratchet wrench in my shirt pocket.

I probably have a dozen 3/8" extensions...

They would be handy for tightening top strut bolts. Instead I bought a sacrificial 17mm 6pt and ground parallel flat faces to hold it with a box wrench.
7-11 was a part time job.
