so, I am on the "carnivore diet"
« on: August 19, 2024, 07:04:29 PM »

I was getting heavy again, ten yrs ago I was on a good run of physical fitness.
An injury sidelined me and my diet turned into merely gluten free, I was nearly 190 pounds last winter.
I needed to restart my fitness journey, as it really is the only way for me to keep on working and earning money.
I can't always rely on good looks and wit.
Early June I weighed 186 with my boots on, using the shipping scale at work - August 19, today, 156.
I'm doing modified push-ups and walking a mile or so on Saturdays/sundays.

"Lion diet/carnivore diet" is suiting me really well I had 2 eggs with bacon this morning and a 1/4 pound of ground beef for lunch and not hungry at all - posting this after work to use the company wifi.
I do not snack now and eat a lot less, in June I started "ketovore" meaning low carb/meat , then switched to full carnivore 2nd week of July.
My only cheat was black coffee, now limited to before  0800 only .  other than that, only drinking water.
My initial goal was one month, but now I plan on 90 days.
I really like it a lot, it's so easy for me, except .... man ... I want steak everyday!
Any of you guys ever tried it?
I am a little concerned about vitamin C but other than that, I do not miss anything really.

I have heard of it.  It is interesting, but not sure I want to take the plunge and give up all potatoes.

Be careful !!  That much protein can play havoc with your kidneys.
There have been several articles in the various news feeds I get that have broached that very subject.
While protein is good for giving you that "full feeling" and lasting longer, you STILL need the fats and carbs for energy.

There are a few things a keto type diet (including carnivore) are supposed to improve and also a few thing that it may increase your risk for if done long term. Cutting carbs will force your body to use up its fat for energy so it is something you need to keep an eye on. I may try it on a short term basis just to jump start a weight loss program but after that I think I would go back to a balanced diet and just moderate the things not on the keto type diets. Ilike my carbs too much to cut them out completely. Best of luck with it.

My father, who is diabetic, has had great success with a keto diet.  He's lost a ton of weight, and more importantly it really helps him regulate his blood sugar better, and the results have caused him to significantly drop his insulin dose, as well as reverse some of the circulation relates side effects of diabetes.

Now obviously he has some different blood chemistry situations and I think he gets labs done pretty regularly to keep an eye on liver and kidney functions, but used carefully it the keto diet has been really good for him for 5 or 6 years now.

I don't really go on "diets" per se, and try to eat balanced. I just now finished my oatmeal mixed with blueberries, which I eat a few times a week for the cholesterol and fiber help. I also love homemade bread (or just now some "Italian loaf" bread from the Costco bakery which is amazing). However both those are examples of foods that somehow make my belly look bigger from bloating or whatever.

A big part of my normal diet is I guess what they call the "Caveman diet" which is meat, vegetables, fruits, etc. Stuff that would be eaten before farming became a thing. Part of my reasoning for eating like that a lot is to try and get my freaking old guy 150ish grams of protein per day, which can be really hard to do without overeating. On the days where I have a ham and egg scramble for breakfast, and a ground beef and vegetable stir fry for lunch, I have high energy and feel trimmer, even if my weight hasn't changed.

This. The human body is an amazing machine. Given a balanced diet, appropriate amounts of physical activity, and no serious contributory medical issues, its ability to self-regulate is extraordinary.

Good for your Dad !
Yeah, those carbs (starches and sugars) can give diabetics grief.  I have a sibling that went "on the needle" in their early 20sand is now getting ready to retire.  And no "floaters" either BUT had to have cataract surgery in the last couple of years - both eyes.

Keep in mind that the "balanced" diet and the whole "food pyramid" thing was supposed to keep our farmers in business, especially around stuff like grains and bread.

You don't need to eat carbohydrates...

If you don't eat protein, you die.

If you don't eat fats, you die - and look horrible while doing so.

If you don't eat carbs, you get leaner since the glucose metabolism isn't storing the excess (and with carbs, there is pretty much always an excess).

Carbohydrates, while thier nutritional value is debatable, do expedite material transport.

It is pure coincidence the obesity trend started around this time.

I feel a fine, I think my thinking has improved.

 I am 5/8 155 pounds ( give or take a few ) - I was nearly 190 in May

I like not snacking and the simplicity of it all
