The SSD will run as fast as the maximum USB channel allows.  That likely won't be any faster than a good quality USB flash drive.
The exception might be if you are using a USB 3 slot with a USB 2 thumb drive.  You might get more speed out of the SSD if the USB interface the SSD is attached to is rated USB 3.
