Need computer help......

I can't logon to my FTP server through my ISP. I recently got a new laptop at work(going from win98se to winXP). I can logon from the other computers in the office so I know it is some kinda setting on this laptop.
I wouldn't be doing this at work except for the fact that our server is down and we don't have anything to do untill it is back up. Th internet is connected directly to the switch so I am still able to get online.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd bet that your new work laptop IP address is blocked for FTP access. Your IT guys just need to to add your IP address your new PC has to the security system tables so it can get to FTP ports outside your network.
As an aside I'm really surprised that they allow any PC on a private network access to any third party FTP stuff. That's a pretty risky thing to do for a whole lot of reasons.

What error are you getting? Is it a connection rejected, an authentication failure, or are you able to get connected but not able to manage files?

I put my user name and password in and it comes back like I put the wrong password in. Just says "Could not login to FTP server with username and password specified." But Like I said, I tried the exact same thing on another computer and it worked fine.
I tried with the firewall on and off both.

have you tried it from an admin login on your xp laptop?
could be a security issue with your user login to the OS.
btw, this kind of thing just reinforces my absolute hatred of XP. i am loathing the thought of replacing my offices network with xp machines. i want my win2k!!!!!
oh yeah, i'm also loathing the idea of having to get workstations with celeron processors because p4 chips are likely out of our budget.

I haven't tried using the admin login but, I am using the same login that I used on my old laptop. None of the security settings should have changed on the server since then.

not security settings on the server, but on your user login to your laptop.
there are some things i can't do or access from my personal login to my network, and also to my workstation, but logging in as admin to my workstation will allow me to do.

Since you're getting an FTP login error it sounds like FTP is responding, it's just not letting you log in.
Dumb question: Are the ID and password case sensitive?

Okay, let's logic this out.
You can connect from other PC's in the office.
These machines all have identical connections to the internet.
Therefore port 21 is not being blocked (the port that standard FTP uses).
You're using the same id and password all in lower case.
You don't have any firewall software turned on at the problem machine.
What FTP client are you using? Double check all settings in the client as compared to another machine that is working. For example, if I gave you the IP address and password to my FTP server you wouldn't be able to get in unless you set your client to connect in passive mode.

Which program are you using to ftp? Are you sure your ISP isn't using secure FTP?

Does this XP machine have SP2 on it? We've been seeing and hearing of some very odd behavior around my workplace with folks running SP2. Had IT tell one guy today to remove it and see if that solved the problem he was having.
Might be worth looking into.

There's your first problem. Try using a real FTP client. Internet Explorer isn't even a decent browser, much less an FTP client. For good and free I highly recommend FileZilla
http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

Oh, I tried filezilla and it didn't work with that either. (ISP tech suggested it)

Try WAISFtp. Also try ftp'ing from your command line, and just for kicks, ping the address you're trying to ftp to.

Are you doing a browser login (IE6)? WinXP sp2 no longer supports browser login.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;887196
Testing with an alternate browser (mozilla/firefox) may determine this.
Using the MS knowledgebase requires as much or more luck than skill , a search on "FTP" will not bring up this message, use many differently worded queries when looking for an answer.

Don't screw around. Run "ftp" from a command prompt.

It's what us old net fogies still use for a lot of things.
I was introduced to the command prompt in 1980 on an old (new then) TRS-80.
But even I don't use command line FTP if I can use something like FileZilla or WSFTP.

It's that message that pops up every 5 minutes with Bill Gates' voice commanding you to upgrade to SP2.
