When will kids learn?
« on: June 01, 2007, 06:19:55 AM »
Climbing without ropes and falling. This happened very close to my house last night. Was wondering what the commotion was about. A few years back a group was hiking above South Boulder creek and a woman in the group leaned over the edge of the cliff to look at the creek. She lost her balance and fell. They searched for days. I don't know if they ever found her.

Gilpin and Boulder county sheriffs deputies and dive teams resumed their search at 6 a.m. today for a teenager who fell into South Boulder Creek while attempting to scale a rock face near Pinecliffe, Boulder County sheriff's Cmdr. Phil West said.

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office is among several agencies helping with the search, West said. The office is lending a communication supervisor, two emergency service officers and a deputy, he said.

Rescue efforts were called off at 10 p.m. Thursday after a four-hour search came back with no signs of the teen, whose name and hometown haven't been released, said Cherokee Blake, spokeswoman for the Gilpin County Sheriff's Office.

The climber was scrambling a 100-foot rock face in Pinecliffe with four friends when he fell directly into South Boulder Creek along Colo. 72, Blake said.

Sad.  It seems like not a year goes by that someone does something foolish like this in Boulder Canyon and the surrounding areas.  Most youth think they are invincible and occasionally cold hard reality bites them on the posterior to prove otherwise.
I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

Obviously, we need to repeal the Law of Gravity - for the children.

It is just too serious of a situation otherwise. Wink

Sadly he did not survive. I guess I should be amazed that it does not happen more often with teenage boys.

Forget the law of gravity-

Let's make it illegal to fall!
One day at a time.

We could all collectively fall an inch so one person doesn't have to fall 100 ft.

It's sad to hear about kids getting hurt or worse. Accidents do happen but to some extent nowadays I blame the reckless adventure junkie outdoors hype you see in the media. My wife and I live in a gateway town leading to about 3 million acres of Federal "wilderness". It's amazing to watch ill prepared and untrained people heading out for a week or two without a clue. My wife used to be on the local S & R until our mutt got too old to nose around any more. She routinely would be called out to extricate the injured or dead who believed real life is like what they saw on TV. Puts a lot of good S & R people in jeapordy.
