Second Dog?
« on: June 05, 2005, 03:28:24 PM »
As a few of you may know from a couple of my other threads I have a border collie right now.  My new neighbor has a pair of BCs and Brooke has been playing with them and loving it.  It has gotten me considering getting another dog in the fall.

For those who have multiple dogs what seems to work best for you? Same breed? Same type (working, etc)? Same size?

Right now I'm considering an Aus Shep or another BC but there are a couple of other breeds that interest me.

Try to get at least a breed where the energy levels and body types match...  an English bulldog might like your collie, but wouldn't be able to keep up!

Peter,
Totally off topic, but am at wit's end.  I'm unable to contact anyone at THR.  When I log in, accepts log in.  But in reality I'm not.  Posting rules indicate "May Not" all categories.  Also shows vB code on, smilies on, img on, html off.  Been having this problem since the update.  I also just logged on to TFL, made one post and the same thing happened.  I could not have been banned, havn't been posting anything because of the problem.  Besides I'm not controversial or much of an idiot.

I think it must be a problem at my end, but am mystified as I am not very proficient in computereeze.  Any suggestions would be welcome.  E mails have not been responded to.  Just saw this post by you, so I thought I'd shoot in the dark.  Sorry for going off topic.

We went with two German Shorthaired Pointers.  Like BCs, they are high-energy doggies.  They are the best of buddies.  I doubt a beagle or bassett would have been as good a choice as a companion for our first dog (male was 4years old when female arrived on scene).  We had the female speyed, as we did not want pups (male is intact).

Our female, when a pup, had even more than the large portion of GSP energy & redirected it toward the male in the form of play.  The male became a better, more behaved dog & the female only chewed up one item of value in all her puppyhood.

I like dogs of all shapes/sizes/energy levels, but matching breeds & mixing sexes worked very well for us.

Good luck finding another dog.

Grampster, please e-mail me at preacherman@thehighroad.org - I'll reply, and we'll see what we can sort out.  You definitely haven't been banned, or anything like that.  I suspect the problem is somewhere else.

Bratch,
We've always had at least two dogs. They keep each other company and lend mutual comfort when left alone (i.e., without humans).
We now have four. I know, I know--that's a sign of mental illness.
But we had the two Labs, and daughter moved into a golf course community where her Doberman might not be too popular with folks on the fairway, so we got Niki to keep Gunner and Bear company. Three big dogs recently got a toy cocker who Leatherness rescued from death row. See how easy it is?

I'm actually planning on getting a second female so I don't have to worry about unwanted pups.

What breeds would pair well with a BC and be watchful?
The only thing about Brooke that I don't like is she doesn't bark when people come to the house.  She is attentive and watches the door but makes no noise.  She'll bark at animals though.

Most of the Aus Sheps I have seen are very watchful and my neighbors BCs are decent so it may just be her.

Thanks

Aren't BCs supposed to be high-energy, bright, herding dogs?  I would try to match with a similar dog, emphasis on the high-energy & sharp wits.  I think the herding instinct is less important to match.  Size matters less, but I would avoid hte extremes (Chihuaua/Great Danes).

Matter of fact, if you matched her with, say, a retriever, you could have some interesting interactions.  My sister & B-in-Law have two pound pups: a 3/4 lab mutt and a mostly border collie mutt (seasoned with german shepherd, maybe).  They invented "The Game," which consists of a human throwing a ball a ways, the 3/4 lab attempting to retrieve the ball & the mostly BC trying to herd the 3/4 lab into a corner, dogs barking up a storm and mock-fighting.  They eventually make it back to the human, saliva-covered and panting in great gasps...ready for another round of "The Game."  They'll do it until they fall out from exhaustion and head to the water bowl.

High energy bright, herding dogs are the positive ways to put it:).

I've grown up with Aus Sheps which are very similiar to BC except they are calmer.  That is actually what I was looking for when I got her.  With my long history with the Aussies I am always drawn to them.

I have heard nothing but good about GSD but have never had one and only have had a little exposure to them.  I'm also not sure how they would interact with a BC.

There are a ton of other breeds that interest me but my experience has been with working dogs except for a Great Dane and Rat terrior.

Oh the choices and trying to decided if the lil' one would take kindly to a second animal around La Casa Bratch.  My brother brought his puppy over and she did fine until it went to get on the couch then the gloves came off.

Territorial disputes are inevitable. I've found the best approach is to "Let them sort it out"--short of disfigurement or excessive blood loss, of course. If you try to prohibit their establishing a pecking order, they'll just get frustrated and it will be even worse when the lid blows. My experience is that a single "event" generally establishes either who's the alpha male, or a sort of mutual respect with no clear winner.

It's even funnier to see the girls competing. Picture a very active Daddy's girl Lab mix trying to "out-cute" a toy cocker. What a hoot.

I like pound pups. Every time I look at the cocker, I think "You were just that far from the end of your days, cutie-pie." It's a good feeling.
