Tankless, on demand water heaters...
« on: August 04, 2007, 08:34:58 PM »
Anybody have experience with them? My water heater just busted, and as long as I'm looking to replace, I want to consider these...I had a 52 gallon kenmore electric...

Do you have gas service?

If so, a tankless water heater will work very well for you, and possibly even save you some money. (As well contribute less to ______ _______)

If you don't have gas, the electric ones are a little less nice, but still work.

The key is to accurately estimate how much use you'll have.  If there's just one or two people in your house, buy that model.  If there's four, buy that model.  You can actually waste money as well as be quite unhappy if you buy a model that's too big for you, as well as too small.

I know of them, haven't dealt with any. They are gas fired. It will definitely be cheaper to run than an electric. I'd go to the yellow pages, look up the three closest plumbers and see what they have to offer. let us know!  grin

Don't expect to see a huge savings. My wife and I use about $15 a month in gas for hot water heating in the summer. Unless you use a lot of hot water you may not see much savings.

One big advantage is that you can take a two hour hot shower if you want to because you won't run out of hot water. This might lead to longer showers, thus more energy use.

I think for a lot of people they are snake oil. A replacement water heater that has better insulation and no standing pilot will fit the bill at a more economical price.

Well the price doesn't look too bad, maybe 40% higher than a standard water heater.  I was really looking at it as a space saving measure, any savings would be gravy.
Now that I think about it, it does seem we went over this not too long ago.
I called Sears, and it turns out my tank is still under warranty, so a technician is coming out tomorrow to verify that my heater is bad. I might get out of this with just the $60 inspection fee.... undecided

My wife is from another country, and in her country that's ALL you see. They are very efficient, because no matter what your hot water usage you heat only the water you use. No heating water to let it sit in a tank and cool down (which it has to do, the insulation only slows the process). In larger houses in my wife's countryy of origin, they don't install a larger unit to handle multiple bathrooms and kitchen, they install multiple small units, each sized for the demand of one or two bathrooms.

In her country, they are so frugal with gas that they don't even leave the pilot running. They light it in the morning for showers, and in the evning to wash dishes. That's it. I imagine in the U.S. by new they have piezo-electric units that don't need a pilot running all the time.

I am not sure if you can even get new appliances with a standing pilot anymore.

Aw, man. It just clicked that if I want a shower before tomorrow(which I really, REALLY need), it's gonna have to be cold. I suppose I could heat water on the stove and wash with it, but I don't really know that it'd be much better. My water comes out of the pipes really cold, for some reason, never gets much above 60 out of the tap, excepting the hot water.

You could always try Green Peter Reservoir.  They are having those geothermal eruptions in the south arm so it should be warm.   laugh

I had an older one in my first house, and hated it.  You could never take 2 back to back showers without running out.

Impossible. The heaters being discussed heat the water "on the fly." The only way to run out of hot water is to run out of either gas for the burner, or water. There is NO storage of hot water. That's the whole point.

Buck up, man!  The water in Green Peter is supposed to be warmer in the middle of those eruptions. Of course, they only last a minute or so.

We hit 70 about two-ish I think.  Got most of the lawn watered before the sun came out.

Hell do what we do over here in Iraq.  The water we use is stored in outside tanks, even if we are on city water.  It is so hot that the "cold" water is hotter than the hot water right now.

Yes you can, around here anyways, they'll be the cheaper models though.

I just put one in this spring.  I got it off Craigslist for ~$350 (~1/3 retail, woohoo) and then started the install.  I spent roughly $100 for gastite brand pipe and fittings to extend the line off of the gas furnace.  You have to use 3/4" line to get the capacity you need.  I had to yard out some 1/2 NPT pipe and replace it. Then the exhaust line, Ouch, that was about $4-500 alone with the roof jack, exhaust pipe and cap for the thing because it all has to be stainless steel with seals and all that good stuff.  The total install done DIY ran me about $1000 and 3 trips to the local hot water heater supply store.  Total would be about $2000 if you had a plumber come out and do it.  $1000 for the heating unit, then about $1000 for the gas plumbing, exhaust plumbing and installation.

The master bath shower is the furthest away from the heater and I still get hot water in less than 30 seconds or so.  It is not as fast as the hot water heater was, but it's close.  I could save even more energy if I put in a recirculator unit to conserve the water and put off opening the water spigot until the water was hot.  Maybe some other time, not right now.  That said, the wife takes some long damn showers now that we have it, and we do really like it.

Am I saving money, sure, on the gas bill.  But overall, I could have bought a quite a bit of gas for the price I paid for the thing.  But we think long term and do enjoy the lower gas bill now.  It's not a huge savings, but I do have a bit more room in the garage now and it is pretty cool to have unlimited hot water.

The claimed savings on the gas usage for water heating is 30%.  Because a pilot running all the time or even a piezo-electric pilot running enough to keep 30-50 gallons of water at 100+ degrees year round does add up.  Compared to my new furnace, the savings are small, however, the bill did go down, so we have reduced our consumption.  Regardless of my wife's loooonng showers.  Thank goodness I don't have a removeable massage showerheasd, she'd never get out of the bathroom. cheesy
