Coffee grinder < $100
« on: June 21, 2009, 09:59:39 PM »
My firstest-ever coffee grinder, a Cuisinart high-speed chopper thingie, is on its last legs.  I want a new mill or grinder, and it would be way cool if it could grind a good, coarse consistent grind to allow me to make French (sic) press coffee.  I've set my current one on coarse, but the grind is all over the place, with some face powder and some BB size resulting.  I tried ONCE to put it thru my Christmas present F-word press, but with poor results.

Can someone recommend a commonly available mill or grinder that will produce both a very fine grind for my drip maker, as well as a good coarse grind?

Thanks in advance...

If you do not mind a manual mill, Peugeot makes some very nice ones.  The cognoscenti (self proclaimed, anyway) will tell you that high speed electrics degrade the beans with the heat of grinding.  The low speed electrics I have seen exceed your price ceiling.

All of the above assumes  a burr mill.
Gee, I'd love to see your data!

The coffeegeeks, of whom I am one, generally consider the Baratza Maestro to be the best grinder available for $ 100.  It is available from a number of vendors at that price:

Lawn-mower blade thingies will always give you a hugely inconsistent grind. That's the nature of an impact grinder.

Mr. Coffee has a decent burr grinder for under $50. I have one and have been pleased with it.

My wife and I bought both our fathers Breville coffee grinders http://www.amazon.com/Breville-BCG450XL-Conical-Burr-Grinder/dp/B000MDHH0Q/ref=pd_cp_e_2 after doing lots of research.  They both are very pleased...

I've been real happy with my Cuisinart burr grinder.
It can be found for under $50

I have two of the Capresso burr grinders, and have had good luck with them for about 5 years.  We use it to grind for an espresso machine, drip machine, and french press with excellent results.  They run about $80-100.
