Do universities offer graphs, charts on their websites?
« on: October 13, 2007, 07:39:20 PM »
I'm wondering if universities offer graphs, charts, etc on their websites for students to use to prepare essays and papers.

Does anyone know?

What do you mean by charts, graphs, etc?  Showing what, exactly?

Most universities have some kind of electronic research system, usually provided by the library.  Some of the research papers contained in these systems may have charts or graphs in them, but sometimes you have to compile your own using the data that they provide.

I can't really tell you much more unless I know what you need them for?

Thanks for the reply, Regolith. What I'm thinking of doing is creating a graph that shows several different historical economic trends.

Rather than having a dozen squiggly lines on a single graph, I would create the graph in Flash, and have checkboxes so that the user could select which economic trend he would like displayed. The user could then either download the page, or do a screenshot, to use with an essay or term paper or whatever.

The reason I'd like to find universities that would be interested in such a tool is that I'm looking for link value for my site, and links from .edu sites carry more link value than from .com or .net sites.

Alternatively, I could find some of those sites that offer term papers and essays for students, and offer them the free use of my chart in exchange for the link value.

Ah, I see.

Yeah, I can't really think of anything that my university has that would be comparable.  If there are some charts and graphs that are directly related to the material and aren't in textbooks, the professors might put them online, but they don't really have a database consisting of nothing but charts and graphs. At least my University doesn't.

What we do have is an electronic research system, which to be honest I haven't used because it really hasn't been convenient to do so yet.  But I believe the system just links you to various scholarly organizations that allow you to search their databases for various research papers and works.

I can't think of any way to bring up a graph of historical data without either browsing through dozens of research papers and getting lucky, or knowing that a graph exists in a specific paper and searching for that  specifically.
