Okay I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and starting a thread on this side of the board.....
 grin

So, after reading the Are you prepared thread....and flowing with the general consensus that the guy is going a little overboard....

Who here carries a BOB regularly in thier car or on thier person?   What's in it?

I just keep RileyMC in my trunk, as he is unafraid to go anywhere with just a pen knife and a bottle of Evian.

Yes, I'm recycling my jokes now.

I'll start.
When I was commuting to work I always had a small kit in my trunk.  My "get home" kit consisted of a large fixed blade combat knife (no name brand from CTD), canteen and water purification tablets, hiking boots, dry socks, duct tape, first aid kit, military poncho, fleece pullover, multi-tool, flashlight and water proof matches.  It was in backpack.  In the winter I made sure my waterproof insulated boots went in the car too.
Lately I've been negligent.

Both vehicles are loaded with misc stuff for possible adventures along the road of life: long handled shovel, jumper cables, tire chains, tow chain/strap, extra oil, tx fluid, & AF, basic tools, flashlights, some ammo, blankets or extra old coats, Billings phone book, TP, 12v compressor, decent jacks and 4-way lug wrench, and gee, I don't know what else I'd have to go look.

The pickup has extra stuff even like a chainsaw, complete toolbox, a .22 rifle or two, some short 2" boards for whatever, and probably a bunch of other stuff that I haven't seen in years. Wink

Daily belt carry is Security Six, 6 extra rds of .357 in loops on a belt slide, Maxfire flashlight, 3" folding knife, VFD pager, watch (hate it on my wrist), and a couple of keys on a short piece of bootlace.

Except when I go out of town.  Then I carry two bottles of Evian, a 4" folder, my 642 and two Bianchi speed strips loaded with +P hollowpoints!

I know it seems like overkill, but you can't be too careful, ya know................

I'm in the process of putting one together for our car. We've always lived in the desert so tire changing stuff, good jumper cables, and a few gallons of water are all I've ever carried. Since we've left the desert for a mountain in the PNW, I really want to get something together for if my wife or I get stranded in the snow.

So far I'm planning on keeping the water etc as it is, and adding one backpack of goodies. Here's what I have in mind. Any thoughts?

Water purifier; I'm thinking a Katadyn Vario which was very well reviewed in SWAT and seems to be a quality model.

A couple Nalgene bottles in a carrier system filled with small odds and ends.

A Camelback, empty. Preferably one that integrates into the backpack. Yeah I know it's not the desert but I can't get over my near obsessive impulse to insure having plenty of clean drinking water.

Coupla MRE's or comparable survival food. Anyone have any suggestions?

First aid kit. Pills for pain, nausea, swelling. Dressings from large to small. Neosporin, uhhh any thing else?

Folding shovel.

Pocket cable saw.

Sturdy 4-5 in fixed blade knife with sheath.

Coupla lighters, waterproof matches, magnesium firestarter, some form of tinder. Any suggestions on that?

2 extra pairs of warm socks, gloves, and ponchos.

And other stuff that I'm forgetting.

In the car, I have a knapsack with a blanket, a couple quarts of water, some freeze dried camp meals, a couple tin cups (useful for boiling water or drinking), multiple firestarting tools, hot cocoa, coffee singles, a first aid kit, flares, jumper cables, a short shovel, and some other misc stuff I can't recall off the top of my head.  I keep my UHF/VHF handheld and a flashlight in the center console.

In the truck, I have the above, plus a tool kit, various automotive fluids, tow strap and various other bits for towing or being towed, leather work gloves, a stout lockblade knife, and multiple cans of "fix a flat".

I don't keep guns or ammo in either vehicle because my job takes me to places with explosives sniffing dogs and humorless armed guards (and sometimes I get to go into DC as well).

Credit cards & AAA card in a separate "wallet" from my regular money-carrying one.  Most of my spending money is in a different pocket than either wallet anyhow.

Maxpedition Versapack Jumbo with revolver & 2 reloads (Taurus 445 Tracker .45ACP or S&W 649 .357Mag), surefire & mini-photon lights clipped to the strap, pen + pencil + rite-in-ythe-rain notebooks x 2 or 3, redundant firestarting (butane lighters, matches, magnesium & flint), poncho, about $75 total in paper & coin, first aid/comfort stuff, 6 protien bars (forget which brand), SAK with sockets, some version of Leatherman, tiny binoculars, 2 changes of socks.  Basic size toolbox has various road & arial flares (shoot one down the road after state trooper who just breezed past you trying to flag him down - it does get his attention cheesy), basic tools, small axe, folding saw, surplus German shovel, foldable lug wrench, 2 fix-a-flat cans.  Spare shoes, rubber boots, 2 or 3 hats, leather & jersey gloves, TP and 1 or 2 flats of bottled water are always in the vehicle.  Glove box has various & sundry redundancies of flashlights + crackers, nail files, car- & AA- cellphone chargers, and maybe an odd pair of jersey gloves  angel.  2 tarps + old surplus blanket + spring clips & 100 ft of paracord in an old tote bag.  Folding camp chair under most of that stuff.

I add to that when I'm taking a road trip, based on how long (both distance & time) and extended weather forcast.  Also add lots of comfort stuff if the Lady Friend is accompanying me.

The bag goes in the house with me at the end of the day.  Yes, there are times it is in the vehicle but out of my sight/control during the day.  I just try to think positive thoughts during those times.

I don't think I'm paranoid.  I just like my creature comforts about me when my travel plans go down the tubes.

I can still put a week's worth of groceries in the cargo area.  That leaves the back seat area for passengers of more "stuff".

stay safe.

The best food to keep in the car, IMO, is lifeboat rations. Small, and immune to temperature changes.

I don't keep one for a couple of reasons.

1. Laziness
2. If something happens, I am probably more safe at work anyway. Food, water, professional medical care, beds, emergency generators, etc. In the event of an emergency, I WILL be called in. One of the other little perks is that I can pass roadblocks with my hospital i.d. card.

If it's TEOTWAWKI, I can get my camping gear loaded up and be on my way in 15 minutes. Plan is to work my up to Colorado where my folks have a fair amount of land.

Oh, wait. I forgot about my tactical carbon fiber assault wheelbarrow. Does that count? grin

Have you ever tried that? I've found it always seems to take way longer than you'd think, especially under pressure.

I did it when we had our hurrican evac kits on beachside Florida.  We even practiced bugging-out a few times. We got darned quick in the load and go techniques.

I wanted to beat the gridlock on the evacuation routes, so time was of the essence.  Now our hurricane evac kits have become blizzard/ice storm snow-in kits, and repackaged for each vehicle in the event we get stuck somewhere.

I have all my camping gear in one spot, compartmentalized in rubber maid bins.  Easier to take camping that way.  I'm sure I could have it all together and loaded in under 5 minutes.

I don't carry a BOB in my vehicle. Instead, I keep my Mommy's number on my cellphone speed dial.

I have lots of stuff but I am not organized enough, as in I haven't gone through my BOB in a year. I envision a written inventory and tracking when I last changed the batteries, rotated the food, etc. Maybe I will actually do it sometime.

Car is generally pared down... Don't even carry a "oh bleep it's snowing" shovel anymore. I _do_ carry a 30' long heavy tow strap... That works a lot better, and is a nice ego booster for whoever owns the 4x4 that comes by. I like living in the country.

Oh, and I've _also_ successfully pulled a 4x4 out of Bad Snow and Ice. With my 2wd FWD 1.5 litre Mitsubishi.... Hooked it up front, and told the guy to just take it easy...
