Good deal or Junk???
« on: December 08, 2007, 04:42:35 PM »
Thinking about buying the wife a new tv for christmas. We have a CRT ~36" that is broken in multiple ways (distorted picture and defective sound). I've been thinking about getting a refurbished lcd of the same picture size.
Any experience in this area? Are these refurbished TVs a good deal or junk?

Refurbeshed electronics tend to be pretty good deals.  They've got as little or less chance of breaking on you than brand new items because they are usually tested extensively before they resell the item.  I'd say go for it.

Refurbs are often pretty good deals. What matters is whether it is a reputable dealer and what kind of service you get after the sale. Who is selling it?

Not sure, but we just bought a Vizio a few months ago.  37" LCD, its a very nice picture.  Its as nice as the other LCD we have, a samsung.

I'd say it depends on the number of refurbs there are. If there's a single refurb available once in a while? Why not?
Those are sometimes not even "fixed", just returned or repossesed models that had a factory check to make sure they weren't damaged.

But if there's a whole lot of refurbs of one product available, that might say something about the product's QC, to me.

I've bought two refurbished PCs in the past. One was ok, the other gave me BSODs for a couple of years. I finally tore into it. Replaced RAM, hard drive, and ultimately the power supply. It was a power supply that was too small or glitchy. Never figured out which. But a new power supply fixed the problem and I used it for another three years. I'm kind of mixed on refurbs.

Depends on the company and the warranty. If it's a Sig pistol, with a one-year warranty... sure, why not. And Apple electronic refurbs are generally a good deal if you don't qualify for the student discount. I'd research other manufacturers as well as I could.

I've got a Vizio 37" from Costco - excellent 1080i picture, the speakers are good enough for movies and TV. I think it was $850 six months ago?
