I always wondered if there would be a market for those of us who's only artistic talent was the ability to draw stick people and a face that every time I'd draw it, it looked like Fester Bestertester.

I'm my company's Sales Analyst.

Showed that cartoon to my Boss.

He got this strange look on his face. Started stroking his chin while mumbling - hmmmmmm...

Started drawing something on a clean white piece of paper, glanced up at me, chuckled and waved me out of his office.

Should I be worried?Huh??

Apparently, there is if the content is funny and not the same old crap all over again.  (See Garfield et al)

I saw the comic when it came out.  Equally entertaining is the document that the problem came from - the GLAT.

I saw that and yes, I would be susceptible to that.  Some one should me the "Sodorku" Foxtrot comic in Kuwait and I promptly sat down and did it...

(Think a Soduku w/ clues like "FF-F8", "sin(pi/2), and "3 * integral(x^2, x, 1, 2)"...)

Is it sad that I saw that comic, got the question and then started pondering the differences between a theoretical grid with ideal 1 ohm resisters and a real grid of ultra high tolerance resistors from Riedon.  Almost picked up the phone to order a mess of 'em when I realized I needed to go home and play Overlord.

I vaguely remember my AP Physics teacher getting into some of that electrical engineering voodoo, but I'm pretty sure I was working on my design for the school literary magazine at the time...

That's an awesome cartoon, working in semiconductors, you can easily argue that this would take a heavy toll on our engineer population. cheesy

When I worked for development, we had a saying about all the PhD engineers.  If you wanna motivate them, just tell em it can't be done.  Usually takes a week, maybe two.  You see some impressive and innovative solutions out of that kind of obsession.

I'm still thinking about the damn thing, and I ain't even an engineer. I'll tell you what it reminds me of though. Those newish electric grid mats you put under the tile in your bathroom. Same principal if you ask me. Fortunately trucks don't go up my street very often.  cheesy

Nope. It's an infinite grid, so the resistance is one over infinity ohms.

Nick 1911's link shows it to be about 0.77 ohms, after rounding Pi.

But there are not infinite (or any) one ohm paths from point A to B. The paths that you can take get progressively worse the further out you go.

There usually is a mathematical trick to this - use the two Kirchoff's laws plus symmetry and series. Yes, generally the answer is not zero because the extra paths have progressively larger resistance, so you have to set up a series that is likely convergent.

Without spending much time figuring out the above, I bounded it to less than 1 ohm with just two iterations. Turns out I was decently close for 1min worth of work. Methinks that saves me from the truck too.

I would think there are an infinite number of paths from A to B, other than that, I'm a lost puppy as to how to figure out the average. I do know one other thing. Put juice to it and it will send just the right number of electrons through just the right places right away.  How cool is that?  rolleyes
