Preach, this may sorta boggle, but by the time I was twelve, I was makin' steers... We generally used a nicely sharpened Case knife, and a spray bottle of stingy stuff. The new steers were NOT happy...

Nowadays we tend to do it with elastator bands, but in the bad ol days we did it with a clean pocket knife and a can of scarlet oil. The old methods are still taught at the local schools.

Yup, little green ones.  And they go on this little four-pronged stretcher thingy that just looks like a testicle remover.

I always prefered dehorning to castrating, but whatever.

So is bush meat acceptable in the dietary laws?  Seems folks in Africa & parts of Asia & S. America favor it.  Could be a renewable source of protien if they managed it properly.

But then there are the monkey gods (literally!!) - so are they castrating those monkeys  or some other set of pests?

Too complexed & perfusing for me to get a handle on.  Please let me know when somebody works this all out.

Grew up on a ranch.  It's a way of life that's still practiced every spring.  Cut, dehorn, earmark, brand, and vaccinate.  All done by hand the "old fashioned way", usually with the help of a bunch of neighbors who, when the time comes, will get our help in return.

And none of them fancy "castranglers" neither.  It's still a sharp knife and a swift, steady hand.

And a flat-iron over red-hot coals.  A little bit of te fat to keep stuff from sticking, one more quick cut, and snacks are ready.  Yum!!
