Mythbusters vs Smash Lab
« on: March 28, 2008, 10:59:48 AM »
Okay, they're both "infotainment".

I prefer Mythbusters over smash lab for the following reasons:

A) The MB folks are characters.  Adam, Jamie, Tory, Grant, and Kari all have personalities.  It would be fun to spend a day/work with them.   The SL 'hosts' could be played by cardboard cutouts and no one would notice the difference.

B) MB is 'serious' fun.  They 'know' that what they're doing is not totally scientific, so everything is done with kind of a wink and a nod and a lot of what they do is just for fun.   SL is way too serious and most the time it seems like they have solutions in search of a problem.

C) MB is done out of part of a rented building and they occasionally disturb their neighbors.  (I could just imagine looking out my office window and seeing the MB folks in parking lot and saying to myself " I wonder WTF they're up to this time !?!?!?!?")   Okay, I get it that SL is a production of DOWNEY STUDIOS, and that DOWNEY STUDIOS IS REALLY FREAKIN' HUGE.   (although there never seems to be any cars in the parking lot.)

D)  I know someone will say that Kari is hot.   Sorry, she doesn't trip my trigger.  (Neither did Scotty).  I do have to give SL the nod for having a better looking female host.  But Kari would be more fun to work with/has a good sense of humor.

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Sweet memories to drive us on,

The Mythbusters crew seem like a bunch of people you'd want to hang out and have beers with. They're real people.

Smash Lab is a bunch of poseur Hollywood sorts playing a role.

Re: Kari.  If she threw her naked self to me, (and I wasn't married), then heck yes.  But she's not really my cup o' tea.  (Call it the Ford vs Dodge vs Chevy or .45 vs 9mm vs 40 or 1911 vs Glock arguement).

Sigh...

I think that the SL folks know what is going to happen BEFORE it happens.

The MB folks assume that things are going to get silly at at least one point (after all, they're messing with freakin' urban legends, right?).

The SL folks blow stuff up for ratings.

The MB folks blow stuff up because they CAN!

And you can feel the difference.

SL is actors. Their script is written for them. The stuff is all written for them.

MB just...does stuff. And Adam's ingenious design for the origami-like unfolding of lead sheets to make a lead balloon with a very soft and fragile material showed a solid grasp of mathematics. They actually THINK.

The two male hosts who work together on Smash Lab (or maybe it was just the two I saw - seems like they work in teams) are awful, there's a cheesy tone to their speaking parts that bothers me.

Mythbusters would be better if it were a half-hour show.

Mythbusters is kinda cool, because they use a "several things in one show" format. You may not be completely into one thing, but at least one other is pretty cool...

Another show that used this format to VERY good advantage was MASH... There would usually be three parallel stories in any episode.
