Bunk Bed help...or my googlefu is weak
« on: April 28, 2008, 11:39:01 AM »
Trying to find a Twin XL over Queen Bunk Bed.  Have only found one so far.  Seems pretty sturdy, if unstylish, and after shipping would be about $1200.  Is anyone else's googlefu better than mine?  Looking for other options, and of course less expensive would rock.
Help!

Over a queen?

I've never heard of one like that. I've only ever heard of twin over full.

A quick google shows several companies that sell it. Try googling without the XL. I found more options and upon looking at details found them to usually be Extra Long, as I'd imagine they'd have to be, to be over and same length as a queen.

Like Marnoot said, drop the XL.

I googled "extra long bunk bed" and came up with a bunch of results.

Also, try calling a local cabinet maker or framer.  It might be more cost effective to have a custom frame made to your matresses.  Or even make your own.  Quaker-style is pretty easy and can be accomplished with lumber and fittings from any Big Box Home Center.

Twin over queen bunkbed sounds like an excuse for the kids to repeatedly jump from the upper to the lower.

Pretty common in resort areas to find them in rental homes.  The house I rented in Duck (Outer Banks) last summer had one, the one we're renting this year has at least one...which is why its making me crazy.

Surfing through results that way now, good tip.
I don't make *expletive deleted*it myself...well...you know what I mean.  I've got two left thumbs, and anything more complicated than pre-assembled furniture can be daunting for me.

Yeah I know....but we need a little extra sleeping accomodations for guests.

Not sure where we'd put it.
Ideal solution would be to replace the single queen with a twin over queen bunk in our spare bedroom.  Still struggling to find one that isn't an expensive log bed.

Got to thinking about it - look into a woodcrafting class at a local college or tech school.  I bet they have a continuing ed version somewhere.  You will have access to all the "goodest" tools, learn a skill, and end up with exactly what you want.

Here's what a few tools and $750 worth of ash and assorted hardware will get you:

Just stretch it, leave-out the desktop, build the queen, and it's beer time!

If you skip the beer and can not "build the queen", you can also avoid "making" the crumbcrunchers

Okay sounds like Rent a center has what I need.  They were confused when I suggested I buy it outright.....not thier standard clientele I think....

Might want to shop around a bit, Rent a center type places tend to be overpriced as well, to keep up their margins to make back their money even in the face that half(or so) of their 'clients' fail to pay them back on time, and it's not worth it to go after the furniture after they've had it for a couple months.

Price actually doesn't seem too bad.   A grand for the whole shebang including matresses.  I need to find time to go look at it, though.

Rent a Center usually has less than what (I call) quality furniture for a premium price.

As long as it's not made in China. Red paint = red lead most likely. Tongue

Check IKEA, too?

I think this one is only a double. $299.

Dude, 2x4s are your friend. Just don't get the outdoor treated ones. Do the structural stuff with 'em, and cosmetic with the plywood of your choice.

Suggestion - loft the whole end of the room.

Also, it really hurts when the guy on top jumps out, and lands on your 'nads.

Tuba fores are for construction framing, garage shelves and sheds.

Which makes them perfect for building a bunk bed, which is essentially a glorified frame and shelf.

Hey, if it ain't good enough to make a simple bed out of, I sure don't want it used to frame my house.  laugh

Besides, it ain't the kind of cut of wood, it's how you use it.
