Mike you had me rollin, that's great!

I haven't been able to take a picture of the heat exchanger (which apparantely are usually called grate heaters or hearth heaters) because my camera is on the fritz, but I did find a picture of a similar unit for sale.



This is similar to the unit I've built, except mine has 8 loops of 1" tube. I'm using a 90cfm blower, IIRC. It is installed such that the glass fireplace doors can be closed normally and the tubes extend into a chamber in the door frame and then vent into the room with minimal air leakage. I can probably seal up the doors better with some weatherstipping. I think I'm going to try to heat only with this unit this fall and see how far into the winter I can get. Any guesses as to the extent of my success?

Looks pretty cool. With a small glowing bed of coals instead 0of a roaring fire, you might do pertty good. I'd try to boost the cfm if you could. 90 is only good for about 1 room.
