Hi everybody :)
« on: August 28, 2008, 06:11:20 PM »
I'm a gunowner and longtime Republican who was referred here from THR.  For the first time in many years, I'm considering withholding my vote in this November's national election.  Although I voted for George Bush in the last two elections, I'm very disappointed in both him and the Republican party.  It seems all they leave is debt and more debt, unresolved war, and bigger more intrusive government than has ever existed in this country.  More of the same under McCain is completely unacceptable, and all McCain offers is more of the same.

At the same time, I don't want the welfare state increased through the 'giveaway' policies the Democrats have been using to buy votes and power. America is a generous nation.  We ARE good people, always ready to come to the aid of those in trouble, be it at home or overseas.  But we are also a nation in regression; requiring two working parents to replace the one breadwinner of the 50's and 60's.

Then there is the RKBA issue.  I don't want my gun rights curtailed by academic blissninnies who believe that fewer firearms in the civilian population equals less crime.  That isn't realistic either.

I could ramble indefinitely, but hopefully you get my drift.  Howdy to y'all!

I beg you sir, please don't withhold your vote.  There are those that tell you that a vote for a third party is like not voting, but that is not true.  I will be the first to concede that Bob Barr has not chance of being elected the next president of these United States.  Or Ralph Nader.  Heck...it's not like Ron Paul even had a shot.  Not this time.  But...but.

Only by 'throwing your vote away' will you get attention in this case.  It makes me very sad that the media and the two big parties have everyone convinced that they only have two choices:  Evil, and the lesser of two evils.

When Ron Paul was still a candidate, I heard more people than I expected talking about him...everywhere.  Work, resteraunts, the grocery store.  People seemed to like what he had to say.  But every time, the conversation ended the same way:  Too bad he doesn't have a chance.

Sigh.

His message was out there, but no one gave him a chance in hell, so no one wanted to 'waste' there vote on him.

Who knows what would happen if people 'wasted' wasted their vote on people they believed in...it make be a slow growth, but maybe was was 1.8% of voters last time could be 2.6% this time, and 3.7%, and so on.  It's not too late to fix things...but it is my belief that the tipping point is coming.

I am not saying you need to vote for Mr. Barr...although he is the best candidate for your right to KBA.  But...please, don't NOT vote.

By the way, welcome to the group!

greg

Undecided:

I despise both McCain and Obama much like you probably do.

Research Sara Palin though, Governor of Alaska and McCain's choice for VP.  McCain's nod to her is intended to be a demonstration of respect to the gun owning and libertarian oriented community from the McCain campaign, while also an attempt to gain more traction in the more centrist portions of the feminist camp.

Palin was the only thing that would get me to reconsider voting for McCain rather than Barr or a write-in.

Whatever you do, though, please vote.  At least a write-in or Barr, if nothing else.  And remember, your local elections matter a lot more than the Federal level elections.  Even if you're disgusted with Washington, be sure to vote for Mayors, Governors, Sherriffs and other local officials.

A vote for McCain is a vote against Obama, that's pretty much how I sum it up. As in all past elections, I must vote for the guy I dislike the least.  undecided

Fàilte!

A Palin/McCain ticket would be better, but then McCain ain't no spring chicken either Wink

By all means, vote - there are local, state, and Federal offices at stake, even if you despise the Presidential choices we're being offered.

My (short) take on the election: McCain is a RINO whose Presidency will do lasting harm to the GOP and conservative politics, and will possibly lead to Hillary in 2012. Barack Hussein Obama goes beyond bad, he's dangerous. I'd say let him go and screw things up so Dems get the boot royally in four years . . .

. . . BUT . . . the next President is likely to make a couple of SCOTUS appointments. McCain may (if we're lucky) at least give us a moderate like Anthony Kennedy; not what we'd like but an improvement over Stevens, Souter, Breyer, and Ginsberg.

BHO would give us someone who makes Ginsberg sound like Ann Coulter.

We are so screwed . . .   sad

My girlfriend and I are done supporting candidates we don't like. Voting the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil.

The only vote wasted is one not cast. If you vote for McCain, he will just think you like what he's about. Same with Obama. Maybe if we all quit voting for worthless major party candidates, things would change.

I don't think either party will get this country where we need to be.

Hey, Undecided. I can't vote. I want you to vote on McCain for me if you are otherwise going to toss your vote. Socialism in America must be stopped at all cost. You say the war is unresolved. Yes, it is. But that's not Bush's fault. Any normal person would assume that the Iraqis would be happy with Saddam removed. They don't act that way. They have shown their true face, wich is beastiality. America should get out of there. People also complain about the gas prices. With China and India growing richer they are now buying the gas Americans used to buy: Supply and demand. Bush isn't so bad. He is 1000 times better than Obama will ever be. For me, please, vote on McCain. A lucky star will shine on you in the future for doing the right thing.

O_M: the Sunni mostly weren't thrilled, but all the Shia I talked with were very glad Saddam died. They hated him a whole lot.

I must admit the choice of Palin complicates things a bit. I'll have to research her to see if she's as good as she appears at first glance. As old as MacDaddy is, the veep stepping up is a distinct possibility. At least we can hope. There's a bumper sticker for you: "Voting Republican, praying for a heart attack."
