The Alaskan entitlement handout amount is announced!
« on: September 05, 2008, 10:19:16 AM »
$2,069.00, direct deposited next Friday (9/12).

Coupled with the $1,200 energy rebate being sent out simultaneously, I have some decisions to make.

$3,269.00

Despise me if you will Old Badger, I'm taking it all out in ones and rolling around in it.  grin

Mwa-ha, mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha......

That'll make a healthy contribution to the Scout26 AR-15 fund.

Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Getting ahead on car insurance, and paying back my dad the last of a loan for a big part of it unfortunately.

It will be nice to have some cash reserves again, finally.

Now if you want to talk about why the Feds own two-thirds of the West, that's another matter.

Stealing Land?
« Reply #14 on: September 05, 2008, 10:38:05 PM »
Yawn.

You know, I used to be bothered by the whole "we stole it from the natives" thing.

I felt kind of "dirty American" about it.

Until I took another look at history.  Of pretty much everywhere.

In recent decades, a number of "stolen" countries have been given back to the natives.  With spectacularly depressing results.

There isn't anything at all useful in the observation that people from Europe invaded the place and displaced most of the native peoples.

Except guilt.  For which I have very little use any more.

I have no problem with someone who wants to engage in a little self-flagellation and gratuitous guilt.  Go for it.  Enjoy the bleakness.

I, on the other hand, will be looking over that-a-way, where the future is.

Things are what they are.

I've never owned a slave or sold one nor even met one.  I've never killed an Amerindian or run a tribe off of their lands nor have I cheated them out of their birthright.  I've also never cooked babies on spikes.

Somewhere in my family lineage I'm sure there's someone who's done all those things.

And I'm not him.

Things are what they are, and I will not pretend that I owe some kind of debt for the perceived injustices (by today's standards) of folks that lived and died decades or centuries ago.

I have a friend who's a dedicated Darwinist and committed proponent of natural selection.  He's also something of an atheist.  And he goes on at length about the "social injustice" of slavery and the "invasion" of North America by "the White Man" and how awful it all is.

Of course, he can't see the irony of his positions.

"Look at it this way. If America frightens you, feel free to live somewhere else. There are plenty of other countries that don't suffer from excessive liberty. America is where the Liberty is. Liberty is not certified safe."

Did the VP to be (Palin) have anything with the increase?

From what I understand, she proposed it.  Due to the oil company's profits, the trust fund was becoming overfunded.

She initially proposed it be a monthly payment on what sounded like a fuel card, but got dragged back to sanity and went with the cheaper and simpler to issue end of year extra payment.

Kind of like how they got the land in the first place? Or was the Apache genocide of the Anasazi ok because they were both Indian tribes?  rolleyes

Boy, nothing like a cold dash of reality to ruin a good rant...  laugh

We're ALL immigrants here, every single person on this continent, if you go back far enough in the family tree.  Sure, it's farther back for some than for others.  Conversely, I (whitest-of-the-white-boys that I am) am a Native American.  Yes, I do actually think of it in capital letters that way, if only because the PC crap annoys me so.

This from the last country to have wood on them as a service rifle. The Israeli heavy-barrel FALs were wooden stocked.

Or, here.

Did the VP to be (Palin) have anything with the increase?

In the Dividend amount?  No, the investment is managed by an independent board.

She is responsible (in conjunction with the Legislature of course) for repealing the state gasoline tax and for putting together the $1,200 energy rebate from our budget overage.

$2,069.00, direct deposited next Friday (9/12).

Coupled with the $1,200 energy rebate being sent out simultaneously, I have some decisions to make.

$3,269.00

Mwa-ha, mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha...

Seriously though,

As part of ANILCA the Natives up here got the same deal, they are members of Native Corporations that own their own lands and by developing or leasing them they are able to pay dividends to their shareholders (members).

The local one, CIRI, pays out between $10-20K a year to each shareholder.

Much better than the reservation and tribal system in the Lower 48.
