Any Eagles fans ? (music not football)
« on: September 28, 2005, 07:32:04 PM »
Well if you didn't know before you read this , i'm a huge music fan , radio or CD's beat TV for me anytime.

Picked up the Eagles latest offering last weekend  ,a dvd,   Farewell I live from Melbourne.

IMHO they are better now than they were 25 years ago, Don Felder is long gone (a plus in my book ) , music was on the mark , vocals were great (1 flat spot by Frey, give him a break he's 58) , everyone was having fun and you could tell. There were a few friends watching with me and everyone remarked about how much better they seemed to get along.

The kicker was Joe Walsh plain stole the show ! If there is anyone who was a fan in the 70's you'll remember Walsh as a half wasted guitar picker who could sing too when he left the booze alone for long enough.

Well don't look now but Joe is clean and sober for a while now and his musical ability is far above where they left off in 1980 , or even where he was in '95 for "hell freezes over". His guitar work was incredible even for a guy half his age, and his vocals were top notch, better than ever. I've always been a Walsh fan even with his problems , and he blew me away with this performance, of course he was clowning as always , but the audience and the band loved it, he even debuted a new song putting all his problems on the table, the upbeat " One Day At A Time" , if this song is released to radio it will be a hit. If you're a fan the Dvd is worth the twenty spot.

One Day At A Time
(Joe Walsh)

Well you know I was alway's the first to arrive at the party
Oh, and the last to leave at the scene of the crime
Well it started with a couple of beers
And it went I don't know how many years
Like a runaway train, heading for the end of the line

Well I finally got around to admit that I might have a problem
But I thought it was just too damn big of a mountain to climb
Well I got down on my knees and said hey
I just can't go on living this way
Guess I have to learn to live my life one day at a time

Oh yeah, one day at a time
Oh yeah, one day at a time

instrumental

Oh yeah, one day at a time
Oh yeah, one day at a time

Well I finally got around to admit that I was the problem
When I used to put the blame on everybody's shoulders but mine
All my friends I used to run with are gone
But I hadn't planned on living this long
I'll have to learn to live my life one day at a time
It was something I was too blind to see
I got help from something greater than me
Now I have to learn to live my life one day at a time
Be kind as you speak to others , they may be facing demons you are unaware of...

Don Henley, 1990:
I got the call today, I didn't wanna hear, but I knew that it would come.
An old, true friend of ours was talking on the phone, she said you found someone.
And I thought of all the bad luck and the struggles we went through
and how I lost me and you lost you.

Bright Eyes, 1999:
The phone slips from a loose grip
Words were missed then, some apology
I didn't want to tell you this
No, its just some guy she's been hanging out with
I don't know, the past couple weeks I guess
Well, thank you and hang up the phone

Also, I hear "hotel california" wherever I go. Someone was even playing it acoustic on the beach. That song is so good. At first I thought it was about addiction... but I think it's bigger than that.

I saw the Farewell 1 show and they are one of the few "old" bands who still sound as good as ever. Don Henley still has great range and the rest of them are still going strong. Heck, they even look good, though Joe is certainly showing some milage (but he hasn't lost anything musically). He could still play for the James Gang.

Eagle Fan?

Hell Yeah!!

As some know I am called a Rebel by some, Desperado by others...
--

 Desperado

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now.
Oh, you're a hard one, I know that you got your reasons,...

...Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger,
your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home.
And freedom, oh, freedom, well, that's just some people talkin',
your prison is walkin' through this world all alone...
--

 After the thrill is gone

Same dances in the same old shoes,
some habits that you just can't lose.
There is no telling what a man might
use after the thrill is gone...
.
Well, time passes and you must move on,
half the distance takes you twice as long.
So you keep on singing for the sake of a song
after the thrill is gone.

--

Take it to the limit

But the dreams I've seen lately
Keep on turning out and burning out
And turning out the same
So put me on a highway
And show me a sign
And take it to the limit one more time

---

Already Gone

So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains
And we never even know we have the key
But me, I'm already gone

--

Take It Easy

We may lose and we may win though
we will never be here again

Well I'm running down the road trying to loosen
my load, got a world of trouble on my mind
lookin' for a lover who won't blow my
cover, she's so hard to find
Take it easy, take it easy

*grin* " Stand up - put your hand over your heart and face Texas!! *grin*.

Special song, Good looking female shooting partner, Yellow Chevelle, black Racing stripes, Hurst shifter, sucker would run. Has to do with running the backroads , looking for another Live Piegon shoot/ or some other clay game ...out in the middle of nowwhere. I ever get some stuff down on paper...well...."Grab another gear we got a shoot to find and we need to get there..." She may be gone- she will never be forgotten. Said this was our song.

Seven Bridges Road

There are stars
In the Southern sky
Southward as you go
There is moonlight
And moss in the trees
Down the Seven Bridges Road
Now I have loved you like a baby
Like some lonesome child
And I have loved you in a tame way
And I have loved you wild
Sometimes there's a part of me
Has to turn form here and go
Running like a child from these warm stars
Down the Seven Bridges Road
There are stars in the Southern sky
And if ever you decide
You should go
There is a taste of time sweetened honey
Down the Seven Bridges Road

---
[Again- special too, has to do with Live birds, shotguns and alady shooting pard...Damn we had fun!!
Shoots were not all sanctioned, and had to know where to find them...We were running late, didn't crash the Chevelle, just needed to take some monies from Doctors is all...*grin*]

Life In the Fast Lane.

He was a hard-headed man
He was brutally handsome, and she was terminally pretty
She held him up, and he held her for ransome in the heart
of the cold, cold city
He had a nasty reputation as a cruel dude
They said he was ruthless, they said he was crude
They had one thing in common, they were
good ....

Blowin' and burnin', blinded by thirst
They didn't see the stop sign,
took a turn for the worst.
She said, Listen, baby. You can hear the engine
ring.We've been up and down this highway;
haven't seen a goddam thing.
He said,Call the doctor. I think I'm gonna crash.
The doctor say he's comin', but you gotta pay him cash.
They went rushin' down that freeway, messed around
and got lost

---

The Long Run

I used to hurry a lot, I used to worry a lot
I used to stay out till the break of day
Oh, that didn't get it,
It was high time I quit it
I just couldn't carry on that way
Oh, I did some damage, I know it's true

--

Tequila Sunrise

Take another shot of courage
Wonder why the right words never come
You just get numb
It's another tequila sunrise, this old world
still looks the same,
Another frame, mm...

---

Peaceful Easy Feeling

And I found out a long time ago
what a woman can do to your soul
Ah, but she can't take you anyway
You don't already know how to go

---
[took 3 boxes to end this shoot-off, under the lights...I thought that Doc was never gonna miss...]

All Night Long

Take care of bus'ness and we have some fun
All night long, all night long
We like a long neck and a good old song
Turn it up and then we sing along

---

Hotel California

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'

He said,'We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away,

---
[I may have had a few "infractions" in my youth, deserted road were meant for street racing in my book]

On The Border

Cruisin' down the center of a two way street
Wond'rin' who is really in the driver's seat
Mindin' my bus'ness along comes big brother
Says, Son, you better get on one side or the other.
I'm out on the border, I'm walkin' the line
Don't you tell me 'bout your law and order

Sunset Grill

Let's go down to the Sunset Grill
We can watch the working girls go by
Watch the "basket people" walk around and
mumble
And stare out at the auburn sky
There's an old man there from the Old World
To him, it's all the same
Calls all his customers by name
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
You see a lot more meanness in the city
It's the kind that ears you up inside
Hard to come away with anything that feels
like dignity
Hard to get home with any pride
These days a man makes you somethin'
And you never see his face
But there is no hiding place
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
Respectable little murders pay
They get more respectable every day
Don't worry girl, I'm gonna stick by you
And someday soon we're gonna get in that
car and get outta here
Let's go down to the Sunset Grill
Watch the working girls go by
Watch the "basket people" walk around and
mumble
And gaze out at the auburn sky
Maybe we'll leave come springtime
Meanwhile, have another beer
What would we do without these jerks
anyway?
Besides, all our friends are here
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill
Down at the Sunset Grill

I saw the Iggles way back when in San Diego when they introduced "special guest Joe Walsh". Everybody seems to think Joe was ALWAYS in the band, not so. That night was a combo of old Eagles and old Joe Walsh tunes, pre Hotel California by at least 6-7 months, arguably one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I understand Henley had a BIG problem with Joe's antics which led to the breakup. Years later I saw Frey and Joe Walsh together again (sans Henley) just about 6-8 months prior to "Hell Freezes Over" and it was STILL a great show. (I never was a big Henley fan cause he picked on Joe and all his songs are kind of whiny if you ask me). Anyhoo... Frey came out first and did a few tunes and then out comes Joe. Now JW USUALLY wore some kind of ballcap when he played but that night he came out with some silly looking black and white checkered hat that you would most likely found worn by a bro down in the ghetto and one of those old glasses, nose and mustache type disguises / face masks and played nearly the entire show just like that. Near the end a woman came out of the audience and swapped HER JW looking ballcap with him and got the silly looking hat in trade. How cool is THAT? I don't recall if he ever took the mask off. I think he did but it was quite a while before it came off. My impression was that he was pretending to be incognito in a backhanded slight to Henley. Like ,"SHHHH, don't tell anybody it's me!" Anyhoo, one moment that stuck in my mind is at the end of "Smuggler's Blues" JW got down on his hands and knees doing the "We are not worthy bow" to Frey and then exclaimed ,"Now THAT'S a song!!"

I was a little dismayed when during the acoustic version video of "Hotel California" released after HFOver, they put JW in there with an acoustic guitar (you could tell he was out of his element, I could anyways) and pitted his solo against another obviously very good Spanish style guitarist who blew poor joe off the stage with it unfortunately. I felt it was part of Henley's campaign to show JW wasn't all what he was claimed to be. To me it's just another example of musical genius (JW) being tromped upon by another who can't accept and live with the fact that there are musicians out there who are better than themselves. Subsequently I think HENLEY SUCKS!! I could also tell, or got the feeling that someone had spoken to JW at some point and told him that if he wanted to be part of HFO he'd have to be good. He seemed just a bit too well behaved during that time. But maybe it was just the laying off of the booze and drugs that was behind it

I DO like that Drew Carey has had him on the show a few times, that's a treat for an old rocker like me...

Sound like I must pick up this new CD!

Another Eagles fan here. Even some of the obscure ones:

King of Hollywood

Well, he sits up there on his leatherette
Looks through pictures of the ones that he hasnt had yet
When he thinks he wants a closer look,
He gets out his little black telephone book
(hes calling, calling, calling
Hes calling, calling, calling
Hes calling ,calling, calling
Hes calling)

"come sit down here beside me, honey.
Lets have a little heart to heart.
Now look at me and tell me, darlin,
How badly do you want this part?
Are you willing to sacrifice?
And are you willing to be real nice?
All your talent and my good taste,
Id hate to see it go to waste."

"we gon get you an apartment, honey.
We gon get you a car.
(spoken) yeah, were gonna take care of you, darlin.
We gon make you a movie star.
For years Ive seen em come and go."
He says, "ive had em all, ya know.
I handled everything in my own way.
I made em what they are today."

After while nothin was pretty.
After while everything got lost.
Still, his jacuzzi runneth over.
Still he just couldnt get off.
Hes just another power junky.
Just another silk scarf monkey.
Youd know it if you saw his stuff.
The man just isnt big enough.

That would be a 1971 Mustang "Grande" with a 4 barrel 351C and factory Hurst 4 on the floor. Big fat tires and everything. (subliminal Deep Purple reference) and my Craig Slide Mount that some real idiots finally stole one day but left the mount. I'm not sure how they got it to work without the mount.

Ahhh, fond memories...

Speaking of JW, during that second concert I told you about I found out that he had produced Dan Fogelbergs "Netherlands" album. Apparently Joe has had little or no love for Fogelberg ever since. He made that abundantly clear during the show. shocked

I'm no Don Henley apologist, but he has had his good moments.  Years ago Mojo Nixon used to do a song called 'Don Henley Must Die', and one night at the Hole in the Wall in Austin, Henley got up on stage with him and sang the chorus.  Apparently it was totally spontaneous, and afterward Mojo told the crowd he was changing the song to 'Michael Bolton Must Die'.

That said, I do love 'Seven Bridges Road'.  What a great song.

Hey, watch it now! Michael Bolton is somehow vaguely related to me. By a marraige in the family. He attended the funeral of a cousin and spent the whole time comforting the deceased's elderly mother. He may sing sappy stuff that makes me gag, but he's ok...

Was it Joe Walsh that said on the broadcast version that they called it "Farewell Tour I" because then they could do as many as they liked?  Funny comment, whoever said it.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.
