Terrorists get the oddest collection of weapons...
« on: October 09, 2008, 09:24:27 AM »
Shooting some pickups, apparently.

I see a decent FAL, and a VZ-58 on full auto. And an AK with an improperly fastened dust cover, with predictable results. (Make sure that front edge is in all the way, there...) ;)

There's nothing "mature" in this, they're just shooting guns. I guess that's "mature" now.

I want to be able to buy my own FAL with da switch... =(

It is rather odd.

We've all seen the weapon piles at times.

Mosin-Nagants, StG44's, Mauser Broomhandles, IDF M-16's by way of the PLO/Hezbollah, Martini-Henry's, Mauser 98's, Lee-Enfields, then there'll be a FN p90 or something in the mix too...
I promise not to duck.

Martini-Henrys?!

I think the oddest I've seen in a video was a Pakistani tribal sort with a Lewis gun.

I've only seen a few of them. Broomehandles and P90's!? Sounds cool.

Could some of you guys provide pics and links? I'll be looking myself.

Yowza. A scoped M14

These were taken from unamed terrorists attacking Israeli soldiers in 2007.

They were near a fence in the Gaza strip.

Anybody care to bet?

I bet it came from an IDF arsenal.

No bets until I get a look at the receiver markings.

Norinco and Polytech made, and still make, their version of the M14 for export.

We just can't buy them here in the States, forcing us to go with the Armscorp M14NM as pictured above,

or the more widely-available Springfield M1A.

Look more closely-er.

Gas junction is farther forward than Gewehr's M14.  Scope mount leaves scope slightly off center to the left.

There IS a M14 magazine down there, but I'd bet it's a bubba'ed M1 Garand.  Maybe one of the ones with the navy plug converting it to 7.62 NATO.  Someone did a mag well conversion on it, or it's one of those italian conversions who's name escapes me right now.

To me an M14, the gas junction needs to be just forward of the tip of the stock, but this gas junction goes way out to the end of the barrel like an M1.

You expect to find one of those near the Gaza strip? I certainly don't.
I would have thought most of the old small arms the Israelis got from the US were Garands, M1 carbines, Thompsons, et cetera. As far is I know America has the only Army ever to commonly use the M14. I thought most were kept in cosmoline until the war in Afghanistan broke out. I realize now that it doesn't look like an M14.

I guess it makes some sense. The Italians sold guns to Egypt.

I guess I was wrong. From here: http://www.alpharubicon.com/leo/m14typeriflesd.htm

Quote
The U. S. Government sold the M14 rifle production machinery to Taiwan in 1968. Taiwan began making their Type 57 rifles in 1969. M14 type rifles have also been produced in the Peoples Republic of China. Philippine rebel groups have used M14 rifles made in the People’s Republic of China. Today, there remain less than 170,000 M14 rifles in the U. S. military inventory. At least 450,000 rifles have been transferred to foreign armies (Israel, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania). Israel was given 35,000 M14 rifles by the U. S. Government in 1973 at the start of the Yom Kippur War. The Israelis built 10,000 sniper rifles out of these and they remained in service until 1997. Another 750,000 have been destroyed by Presidential Executive Order.

Turns out they're used more commonly than I thought. I guess I also should have realized that there were some left over in 'Nam after the war.

Everyone knows how most types of guns, however uncommon, usually find their way all over the world. I guess I should have taken that into account.

Now where in the world do they get P90s!

I remember reading in a magazine, I think Soldier of Fortune, about some of the really odd rifles and hackjobs that they find. Pretty interesting stuff.

You ever see pictures of Vietnamese with freakin MG34s? It's certainly not a documentary, but the movie Lord of War gave me an idea of how huge the global arms trade is.

The most obscure firearms do get shipped all over the world. That can be a good thing.

Edit: I suppose nothing we see in arms caches should surprise us, and yet it still does.

If you read the production notes for Lord of War, it turns out it was much cheaper for them to buy real brand-new AKs than to rent fake ones. So that's what they did. Then they sold them back to the arms dealer.

Also, the tanks seen in one scene were real, and they only had a few days to film them in a line there, since they were being shipped to some African country via arms dealer!

Think of the money they could have raised selling those through the CMP.

(Yes, I know: they're technically machine guns, so it's a no-go.   *sigh*)

We all know that if you've got alot of cash, and you're willing to break the law and you search long and hard enough, you can probably get almost any small arms you want. Maybe not in America or Mexico, but certainly elseware.

That movie was made by anti-gun hypocrites, but it is pretty good and the idea behind the story is realistic. It certainly did not make me want to petition the UN to make them pass an ineffective statute against the global arms trade. The global arms trade is not really a bad thing. Guns are just tools that can be used for good or evil. All that matters is who wields them.

I missed the point of the movie, then, because I saw it as total gun pr0n. =D (Though I did wonder why Ukrainian soldiers were carrying Type 56's...)

Even the producers said they found themselves liking the arms dealers they were working with.

B-b-b-but the arms dealer will just resell them to someone else, who will use them to kill people!  They should have destroyed the AKs they bought, as a political statement against the global arms trade.

You also might have to spend some time in shady bars in Amsterdam, NYC, or Mexico City. Don't worry, though. I bet you could get anything into the US if you  come back as a passenger on a cargo ship.

At least it would be easier than breaking into a Secret Service armory. And you'd have cash left over for other things.

Let's see: you're going to rob a Brinks truck so you'll have money to buy guns.

But you need guns to rob the Brinks truck.

You might want to rethink this.
