Is BitTorrent a piece of Bit?

I am using BitTorrent for the first time to download a +4 GB file.
It keeps stopping and gives an eta of 4 weeks to complete.

Anyone else using BitTorrent with or without problems?
Any thoughts on why it's going so slow?

That's precisely how it should be . Remember that Bittorrent doesn't use servers, it uses other guy's private connections they're kindly sharing to distribute stuff. That's why it doesn't get decent bandwidth unless the stuff is REALLY popular.

Look around and see if you can find the file on Rapidshare or a similar host.

Bitlord is another client that works with torrent shares.
If there are only a few other clients online with parts of that file 4 weeks may actually be a conservative estimate.
If you are downloading a DVD iso or movie you will get it quicker at blockbuster.

I can get it quicker with HTTP/FTP but was told BitTorrent would be faster.
It's the latest Debian ISO.
I'm looking at getting back into it after a nine year absence.
If it doesn't download I may just order it.

If you can find a popular Debian torrent it will likely beat a direct download in speed.
Keep in mind that your upload speed will also shape your download speed, don't down overboard and crank up your upload to the point that your down speed crashes, especially if you are using cable internet. Give and ye shall receive.

I tried a couple different torrent clients, ended up switching back to Azureus because while it tends to slow down my browsing it also gets about 10X+ the download speeds, even for 'overnight' tests.  It would even get connections and download where other clients wouldn't.

And yes, I made sure first that I had the other clients set up with my NAT firewall.

When I want to browse/play online games I simply shut it down.

Bittorrent can be very fast.  I've had it transfer very large files in a relatively short period of time.  But as others have said, it depends on how many other people are in the torrent, how much of the data they have and how fast their connection is.

I'm starting to think part of the problem is in my system.
I can't open the HTTP download from this computer
but I can from my server.
I had a virus try to get in yesterday. I thought I had
it all stopped and out but I'm double checking now.

As others have said there are several factors involved in order to get a good download speed.
Number of seeds is pretty important.

Coming in from my Linux now.
I can do things online.

I guess someone got something past my firewall, antivirus and spybot.

I'll have to look a little deeper tomarrow.
The whiskey is going down too smooth tonight to worry about it.

I doubt they did but I hope they left some tracks.
I haven't played in a lot of years.

*heh*.  you sound a lot like an old friend of mine.  He had a box on his home networked that was left as bait for script kiddies and the like.  Pretty naked box, nothing important on it.  Back when being a "l33t h4xx0R" was the hottest thing. 

He had some VERY nasty little scripts of his own.  As a QA/QI guy for Intel, his job was to try to break chips before they came out into full development, and he knew just about every little bug there was.  AND how to exploit it.  When your scripts are named "zap" "zorch" and "nuke", there's not much left other than a crying script kiddie.
