SKS update
« on: October 23, 2008, 06:07:34 PM »
My friend Luke has got himself into a Norinco SKS, but now someone on HighRoad.org is telling him it's illegal.  And they're telling him it's not the SKS D that he thought it was, it just has one o' them adapter kits on it.  I was hoping some of you who know what you're talkin' about might visit his thread, and help him out.

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=400939

Or if you're boycotting (or banned from) TheDerekRoad.org, you could share your wisdom here, and I'll have him look at this thread.

I'm afraid I just don't know much about scary assault rifles, or the laws which surround them.   =(

I think (think) that it's a "Paratrooper" model, and I don't think there's a D model of that type.

They do need to have a high US parts count.  I don't recall exactly which parts were best to swap out, but I do remember that you're supposed to put one of those spring-loaded firing pins in it to prevent the infamous SKS slamfire, so that's one.  If the foreign parts count is <10, then it's in compliance with the 1989 import ban.  IIRC, there was something about the bayonet making it impossible to keep the parts count right (or something else equally stupid), so you're not supposed to put the bayo on it.  I know, it's lame.

That's only on Wednesdays that fall on odd days of the month.

Geez, don't you read the regulations?

It's NOT a Paratrooper.

Here's a photo-comparison of a standard SKS next to a paratrooper.

Here's a photo of Luke's gun.

Plus, it doesn't have a parachute anywhere on it.  :)

I haven't seen this gun yet, but if it turns out that it WILL accept AK mags, what is the best type to get?  There's a massive gun show on Saturday, so...

I see major problems.

I can see the bare hint of the "duckbill" for a magwell adapter as well as the support pin in the stock.

I can also see that the mag release is the standard AK type.

Norinco SKS-D and SKS-M rifles have no duckbill, as they actually have AK style magwells, and they have a welded-on AK style mag catch.

Mix a duckbill 30 round mag and a bayonet lug and you better change something, fast.

Pretend you're talking to someone who knows nothing at all about this subject.  Because you are.

What, exactly, has to be changed?

Or is there a good website that explains this accurately?

I don't know of a website myself but maybe someone else does.

What we need to see is the mag out and the mag well.

If you can get pictures of that it would be very helpful.

Yes, post more evidence.

Mwa-ha, mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha...

Just kidding, this is exactly the kind of playing by the rules (no matter how silly they may be)  that should be lauded.

FWIW, my SKS Sporter (short barrel/AK mags) is clearly marked "SKS Sporter" on the reciever and I suspect the SKS-D and SKS-M models are clearly marked as well.

I've been hoping to get a look at the gun, but it hasn't worked out yet.  I'll definitely see it on Saturday, at least.

Where do you get an SKS sporter?  I'd love to have a short-barreled SKS.

I found it at a local gunshop, it really is a badass little rifle...

(also note the very visible mag release that I cannot see in your picture)

That last one just looks like a regular SKS Paratrooper, probably Norinco, replaced in a Tapco stock...?

I guess I should qualify "badass" by adding "for an SKS"...

It's a Norinco "Sporter" (which many people call a Paratrooper), that is a standard SKS stock, just painted black.

Um.

When BATFE is concerned, that is BAD advice. Ten years in federal prison does not sound like fun to me, does it sound like fun to you?

Gonna agree with Manedwolf on this one... bold print is mine.

I have a Norinco Paratrooper.  Shoots nice, and I finally get to use all those stripper clips I got with that case of Romanian ammo.  Paid more than it was worth, but hey whatever, it's a beauty.  My buddy used the bayo as a stand, and the bayo pin flew off.  Luckily I found the spring.  Oh well, I know mine is legal!   =D

On a side note anyone know where to get a pin for the bayonet?

Once the pin is pulled on a bayonet that thing is going off.

My great-uncle got a medal in WWII for jumping on a bayonet a German threw into their CP.

He saved them all.

It's not the dumb law that I'm worried about....it's the guys in body armor with APC's & full-auto weapons who break down your door to enforce that dumb law that I'm worried about....esp. considering that I don't live that far from Waco....

See 922(r). It concerns imported "assault weapons" and is unrelated to the AWB.

I'm trying to picture your story as you worded it, but I'm thinking you mean grenade?  While the bayonet did kind of go flying, I don't know about throwing one into a CP to kill multiple people.

It can if it's an assault bayonet......
