Well, not all of Indiana.  Here in Lafayette it is $.40 higher (less competition unlike bigger cities).

Indianapolis gasoline is getting silly cheap now.

I work in Brownsburg and drive around quite a bit. Must have passed the gas stations by the interstate 5 times today.
This morning it was $2.03 then it went to $1.99 and finally around lunchtime it was $1.95. Thats when the news crews showed up and by 4pm the pumps had lines of cars waiting for gas.

The Citgo right down from my house was $2.69 a gallon this morning.

This afternoon when I was on my way home, it was $2.55.

Best I saw driving in to work this morning (10/30/08, just outside Austin, TX) was $2.329.

With $150/bbl oil, the highest I paid was $3.999, of which, IIRC, about $0.385 is tax at the pump, making the price of the gas itself $3.614.

Oil has since fallen about 60%, so if the price of gas were to fall proportionately, I ought to be paying $1.446, plus $0.385 tax, or ~$1.83 . . .

But I'm not . . . and considering the price elsewhere in the nation, the other, non-tax fixed costs built into the price don't account for the price differential.

Moreover, just in the Austin area, the same brand of gas can easily vary $0.25 a gallon from one part of town to another.

Looks like dealers in some parts of town are colluding to keep prices inflated.

Iffin ya want to believe in evil price fixing conspiracies, then have at it.

But...

If you're actually interested in what makes gas prices what they are, you should do a little research.  I'll give you a free hint to start you off: crude oil and taxes aren't the only components in the price of gas.

Perhaps when skimming my post you missed the reference to " . . . the other, non-tax fixed costs built into the price . . . "

Which of course does nothing to explain a price differential of more than 15% from one side of town to the other . . .

That's just the thing, the "other non-tax fixed costs built into the price" do account for the difference.  At least they did when I ran the numbers myself recently.  Looking at the numbers you posted, it would seem that those other fixed costs account for much of the difference you're seeing, too.

I realize that it's much more fun to believe that you're being gouged, but it just doesn't look like that's the case here.

$2.32 on the west side of Grand Rapids this AM.  $2.54 is the norm.   Gas in W. Michigan is 3rd only to California and Chicago as to usual cost.
