A state you or anyone else on this board wouldn't want to live in. That's all I'll say. I don't want to reveal too much about myself on the internet.

I’m going to guess California or New York.  That's purely based on my own political preferences and bias'.

Why do you hold the opinion that collusion is the logical reason behind why you are paying more for fuel then I?  You may be able to call the fuel pumping, refining, shipping and distributing system an oligopoly, but that still doesn’t account for why you should pay higher fuel prices then I am.

Examining this from a rational point of view, there must be some difference in the localities in which we live.  In about 5 minutes of investigating, I turned up this little gem:
Quote
New York State has the highest gasoline taxes in the nation at approximately 62.9 cents per gallon, including both state and federal taxes. That’s 2.8 cents more than Hawaii’s tax burden (60.1 cents/gallon) and 2.9 cents more than California’s—the third-runner-up (60.0 cents/gallon).

Assuming you live in CA, HI, or NY; you are paying higher fuel prices then me not because of collusion; not because the free, capitalistic market has failed you – but because of government taxation.

Enjoy it!  You are paying for, and thus theoretically receiving, more and better socialized services due to the fact that you pay per capita far more then I on fuel taxes, but also likely have a higher population density.

- or -

Am I way, way off in my judgment of what state you live in?

You can probably guess. What region would most members of this board (including me) hate to live in? Think about what we value and imagine the opposite.

Why so coy, Freedom Lover?

The only good thing about high taxes is nice, well maintained roads.

Kalifornia uses reformulated gasoline, especially during the winter months.  It costs more than the unleaded found in the rest of the CONUS.

It's down to $2.13 here.  Dropped about $0.10 today.  Maybe it will actually go under $2...

The shippers and gas station owners/corporations, of course.

  They're not the ones that enact onerous legislation or confiscatory taxes, you know.  Prices depend on the market, not the supplier's greed.

Rush Limbaugh said just a day or two ago, that gas was over three dollars in Palm Beach, Florida.  Or at least in the super-swanky part of it where he lives.  Of course, I'm not sure he pays real close attention to gas prices.

Yeah, telling someone what STATE you live in is "too much."

But, maybe you're right. Based solely on your screen name, which tells us a LOT about you, I've been able to get several credit cards in your name and have distributed them to the staff here...

What state are you in that still has $2.20+ gas?

There are places in Northern VA that, YESTERDAY, still were charging in the vicinity of $2.60/gal or more.  These stations were within 10 road miles (probably under 5 miles straightline) from multiple stations charging under $2.00/gal.

Lowest I've seen this week has been $1.93/gal, IIRC, on the way to Bailey's Crossroads/Falls Church area.

Come a little farther east on 29, Eric.

The Exxon at Lee Highway and Cedar Lane has regular for 1.89. It's probably a bit less right now.

The Shell at 236 and Prosperity is supposedly still in the 2.60 range for regular.

That's one of the one's I was thinking about; that and the 7-11 (I think) just a little further down 236 are both outrageously high compared to the rest of the region, like $0.40-0.50 over what the general run of prices seems to be.  I've passed the Exxon you mention when I go visit the wife at her office for lunch sometimes, but can't remember ever even looking at the prices.  May have to run up there next time I need gas, it's really not a long trip at all.

Remember the days when regular gas was something entirely different?

Remember the days when the choices of gasoline at the pump were

1. Regular (then leaded)
2. Unleaded
3. Super Unleaded

Now we have

1. Regular (now Unleaded) 87 octane
2. Mid 89 octane
3. Premium 93 octane
4. Racing 100 (+) octane

If I were 30 years older, I suppose my association with the word, regular, would refer to something entirely different.  =D

Remember the days when the choices of gasoline at the pump were......

  • Regular (leaded)  @ 30 Cents per
  • Ethyl or High Test

FWIW Last fill up on Thursday, Jerry (owns the filling station) was clicking back the $$ on the pump to 1.78.
I thought of youse guyses and this thread.

That's right, the OWNER of the station goes out to the pump with a key, and adjusts a gear regulator to set the price.
He also fixes flats while you wait.
