I am not a veteran....

I have not heard of "sparky" before today (not counting the references to Radar's friend from M*A*S*H)...

I have watched "The Final Countdown"....more than once, even....

....and if anyone could have figured out a way to launch a B-52 from a carrier, it would have been Jimmy Doolittle....  =D

...and most reporters couldn't tell a B-52 from a B-12 vitamin pill....  :P

As for "Sparky", I first heard about him from Tanknet.  He's famous for his, um.. "out of the box" ideas that are usually considered absurd.  He apparently hates the Stryker and thought that the M-113 APC would be the be-all, end-all AFV.  He also single-handedly came up with the nickname "Gavin" for the M-113, and apparently writes as though that name is in fact official.  Take a look at this LINK for a great explanation behind the - whatever you want to call it.

I saw "Tha Final Countdown" at a drive-in as a kid. Supposedly those were real zero's placed back in mint condition just to be blown up for a movie.

As for the M-113. I vaguely remember seeing that name on a Monogram or Revel model kit for an M-113 in the 80's. Maybe that's where he get's his ideas from.

They did not blow up any real planes. Like all 80's movies before CG, they blew up R/C models with pyro charges and slowed down the film. R/C aircraft have been used for stunts, FX and destruction since they first existed.

(Even Empire of the Sun used R/C models.)

Also, anytime you see one of those in any older movies, it's invariably a painted T-6.

I gotta say after bring an M113A2 driver for a year that they are totally gutless.  Supposedly the A3's are a lot better, but I hated the A2's I drove.  They did ok speed on the flats but would just crawl up hills.  Never heard them called a "Gavin", it was always just "track"
