I use about 300 pounds in the back of my Ranger.  Helps immensely.  I put the bags behind the axle, they stay put better when they're behind the wheel wells.  It absolutely does not harm the steering, lessen the grip of the front wheels, or encourage fishtailing.

Three or four tubes of sand (75 lbs. each) will help. I have one in the back of my 4x4 Cherokee and it helps. Good tires are a great help.

Right now the extra weight in the back of my old pickup is the firewood that I haven't unloaded yet.

Except neither have I driven the pickup anywhere either.  But it's ready if I do, and if I could get it started at -20.  =|

Nice thing about Suburbans, though, is that they have enough weight on the back end already what with all the extra metal and glass.   =)

I have a little over 400 pounds in the back of my tacoma.  Helped a lot on the really slick ice, though I can still swing the rear end around on what's out there if I try a little bit.

Before that I was slower off the line than semis...
