Another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry.

“The take here is that everyone and their mother want to be bailed out from the banks to the big three,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt. “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.”

Francis said in a statement that “the US government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people."

“We should be delivering [the request] by the end of today to our congressmen and [Secretary of the Treasury Henry] Paulson asking for this $5 billion dollar bailout,” he told CNN Wednesday.

This is not a driveby, I am just speechless. Huh?

What will the millions of out-of-work Americans do if the porn industry goes, so to speak, belly-up? Think of the idle hands with nothing to tempt them! :rolleyes:

Seriously, is the porn industry's request for a bail-out any more absurd, outrageous, or nonsensical than the request of any other industry that has approached Congress with hat in hand? If this is truely the land of equal opportunity, then they ought to be allowed to ask for time to suckle at the government teat just like everyone else. (Besides, they are pros at that behavior, so may be able to show the others how it is properly done.)

So why the greater outrage over this?

I think Larry Flynt is being sarcastic. But I think he's more deserving of a bailout than the Big 3 and Wall St.

I've gotta say... if there was a list of companies handed out to every citizen that had on it every industry that needed "bailing," the automotive one isn't one I would've checked.

Certainly his style. Flynt is a better American than most of the tools that are serving in DC. He's actually put his own freedom on the line to defend the constitution....better than most Congresscritters can say for themselves.

The industry gets the money from paysites, advertisers, and spammers.

Enough suckers are willing to pay for quality and quantity that the industry is worth billions. Why do you think female pornstars get such high pay?

Most female pornstars don't make that great of money. $500-1500 a shoot. Which, I guess if you work every day would be a lot, but you have to take into account what they are doing. Some "popular" girls make more, but they are the minority.

I think the whole thing is funny, they obviously don't believe they are going to get the money, they are just trying to make a statement.

Even if one DID support all of these bail-outs, which I DON'T, one would still recognize a vast, yawning chasm between important stuff like financial services and automobiles on one side, and optional stuff like entertainment on the other.
