Stan Lee 'to create world's first gay superhero'
« on: January 14, 2009, 05:22:32 PM »
I am not making this up.

I suspect the a caped and coordinated crusader will not go over very well.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/4237161/Stan-Lee-to-create-worlds-first-gay-superhero.html

Lee has reportedly created a character called Thom Creed, a high-school basketball player who is forced to hide his sexuality as well as his superpowers.

It is not known what kind of powers Creed will display.

Lee, the former head of Marvel Comics - who also created the Hulk and the X-Men - will unveil Creed in an hour-long television special made in the US.

If he proves popular with audiences, the programme will be shown in Britain.

Lee developed the idea of a gay character from the award-winning novel Hero by Perry Moore, the Sun reports.

A television industry source told the paper: “It was only a matter of time before we had our first gay superhero. And if there is one man who can make him a success it is Stan Lee.

“There’s a real buzz among comic book fans.”

Lee recently told GQ magazine that the world needed an Economist Man and a Foreign Relations Man to help the world weather the global financial crisis.

"Being president these days is too big a job for someone with just one superpower. Though I do think Obama has a certain Mr. Fantastic quality," he said.

"It is not known what kind of powers Creed will display."

Oh, but we can speculate, can't we? <gigglesnort>

Nothing new. Whole bunch of gay superheros in the Marvel universe. Probably a crapload of them in DC, and the smaller companies as well.

I think its a smart business move, folks who don't normally buy comic books will snatch those up because of Obama.

Every single long-held American tradition does not need to be bent to the whims and pandering of the liberal revisionists.

I see it as part of the same movement that has deleted toy guns from the hands of kids playing in their yards, that tells them that playing "War" or "Cowboys and Indians" and even "Cops and Robbers" is unacceptable. That takes institutions like Santa Claus and makes them into mean-spirited, cynical reactionary humor that degrades the original traditions.

I don't like it. Why should the sexuality of a superhero even matter? Why should it be brought up? Shouldn't whether they can catch a crashing plane or whatever be the only thing that matters?

I dunno. The whole cape and tights thing seemed gay to me, even when I was a kid.

Eh, Stan Lee is the AUTHOR. He can put whatever the hell he wants in the comic.

Well... doesn't the comic superhero industry at least pretend to have something deeper than random guys catching falling 747s? If we can discuss the relationship of Clark Kent and Louis Lane, then we can also have Bob Ghent who has a relationship with Steve.

Like in all art, the sexual identity of the character matters to what extent it helps define him as a person.

And yes, there's a variety of LGBT uperheroes in both Marvel and DC comics.

No one said they were a problem.  What's your problem?    :|

The problem is not with the gay superhero.  The problem is not just the total dearth of sexual morality.  The problem is that we have begun to call good evil, and evil good - in a BIG, BIG way.

Gotta say I think a lesbian superhero is a lot more plausible.

The gay superhero's that I know of are:
Northstar
Collosus (in Ultimate Marvel)
and possibly Ozymandias from The Watchmen (some people say Rorschach is to, but I just don't buy it)
"The people in the gun culture have a better safety record than any police department in the nation, but in
several states actually prohibit us from using guns for self-protection, and in all the other states except one
they make us buy a license. They tax us so we can have more cops, and when crime still goes up, they tax
us more and ban more of our guns."

Um, Superman?  Come on, no matter what he goes through, he's still got that nice, slick hair, with that cute little curl up front.  No straight man uses that much Aquanet.

Come now.  Everyone knows that Robin was the first gay superhero.  Maybe not openly gay, but he lusted after Batman.
