A320 crashed, floating in the Hudson!
« on: January 15, 2009, 03:53:28 PM »
Holycrap. They DO float.

I never thought I'd see that. The passengers are being evac'ed, it's in the water right near the USS Intrepid!

Quote
US Airways Plane Crashes Into Hudson River
NEW YORK (CBS) ―

A U.S. Airways airplane has crashed into the Hudson River, CBS 2 has learned. The plane appears to be in one piece and passengers are being evaucated by rescue teams.

Officials tell CBS 2 the airplane is Flight 1549, an Airbus 380 that took off from La Guardia Aiport. There are reports that there were about 60 people on board.

There is no word on injuries to passengers.

The plane is floating upright in the water near the USS Intrepid.

No details yet, but if it's one piece, that's a damned good ditching by the pilot, I would think?

There's no way it's an  A380.

Prayers to the flight crew and passengers.  I flew out of Newark last night and the temperatures in the area are frigid.  I imagine exposure would be a real issue for the survivors of the crash.

It's on CNN right now.  I see no survivors being evacuated, looks like all the doors are still shut.  I am wondering how the hell they are going to get everyone off.  Looks like there is a distinct possibility of everyone actually surviving.

Religious people amongst us, pray hard.

ETA: Maybe they evacuated already, they are interviewing someone who was on the plane now.  FAA is saying they likely hit a bird.

Correction, it's a 320. They just revised.

Good on them.  Very good, something you don't hear about very often, people actually surviving these crashes.

Honestly, whatever one might say about NYC, if you have to have something bad happen that involves sinking or fire, that's the best harbor to have it in. Their fireboat and tug crews are some of the best in the world, and react very quickly.

And from what I have heard, ditching a jet airliner in one piece is very hard to do. I hope the pilots are alright, because that seems pretty heroic to me.

They're saying it was a bird strike to each engine. Some bad luck there, if that's the case, to suck one into each engine.

I would like to see video of the actual landing. Witnesses said it was going very slow over the water, then nosed up slightly and dropped with a splash. Which would be a perfect pancake, stall to lose as much of that remaining speed as possible, best way to ditch.

Has anyone ditched an airliner so successfully in recent years?

I'm alive and dry.  It wasn't me; not my company.

Maybe a flock of birds in both engines, but not one bird, unless it was a condor or pterodactyl.

Yep, lots of airlines have ditched successfully.  Well, success is relative.  Damn fine job in this case from what I can see.

Now you see why we brief you customers on emergency exits and lifejackets even when "flying over land."

I wonder if any of my coworkers were on that flight.  We have lots of people that commute between NY and Charlotte.

An A380 landing in the Hudson would probably cause a Tsunami.  =D

Of course, having seen the surface of the Hudson, I'd think at times you could make a perfect wheels-down landing and taxi on it.

Yes, planes float.  At least for a little while.

The Airbus 320 family (318, 319, 320, 321) have a ditching switch that closes all doors and vents that are below the waterline.  I wonder if the crew had time to push it.

They must've flown through a flock of geese.  Reports are that everyone is now off and safe.

Reporting everyone got off alive.  Seems to be only minor injuries.  I'm no pilot, but it sure seems like the pilots did a kick ass job on this one.

I still think my favorite "plane in water" one is this...Forgot to shut it down, and it leaves! It throttles back up and starts heading for shore!  Go to about 4:12 when they're already in the boat. The plane decides to wander off under power.

CNN talking head just said "No word yet if a bird struck one engine, and the pilot shut down the second"
