gun related and other good books.
« on: February 10, 2009, 10:15:13 PM »
Hi APS per a friends suggestion I read Matt Brackens books awhile ago. I have read them more than once and am looking for something else to read. Amazon suggests unintended consequences but their prices are a bit high. Any other suggestions or any other sources for  unintended consequences where I don't have too forke over 50-300 dollars for a book. Open to all suggestions.

Huh. I paid $30 for Unintended Consequences by ordering it from a local bookstore (Waldenbooks)'

And it is a good read.

Buy it here from the publisher for $28.95. http://www.accuratepress.net/ross.html

Are the multi-hundred dollar copies the editions before he changed names?

It's a big, thick hardback book that's hard to put down.

I have a dilemma.  If I have that book in the house, I'll need to tear off the cover, lest I concur the wrath of Wife.  Yet if I do that, I'll probably be killed in my sleep by MicroBalrog's secret Israeli super-tactical hit squad of ultimate Wrath-of-G_d death.

What to do?   =)

Uh, the cover's just a dust jacket. The actual cover is simply black, with Ross's signature in gold and the title on the spine.

An excellent idea! My copy lacks the dust jacket. :D

Really? My wife read it at the same time as I did and didn't freak out about the cover.

Well, my wife's not "cool," I guess.     Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen the cover up close.  It may not be as racy as I think it is.

I honestly just don't understand what there is to freak out about. Does she not trust you, or is she hypersensitive or jealous about even pictures of other women, or...... Well, I can't really think of any other reasons she'd "freak out" about it. Can you maybe clarify what she would get so upset about?

I won't make assumptions about your wife, but I know my dad couldn't read a fishing magazine with pics of women in bikinis in them without my mom acting like it was hustler. They don't have a very healthy relationship....

John Ross changed his name, or the title of the book was changed?  I don't follow...  Please 'splain.

I remember hearing that in the first edition some of the characters who get killed off bore the names of RL people.

I know some of you will take this as a sermon of some kind.  It's just an explanation.  If you want to discuss it further, we could start a new thread.

I didn't say "freak out," and I was exaggerating a bit about the "wrath."  I would guess that my wife and I have different ideas than you do, about images of half-clad women, the significance thereof, and some related topics.  I don't regard it as unusual for a woman to prefer that her husband not have pictures of other women, in revealing clothing.  I think my wife in particular would be unhappy to find such a book cover on my shelf, as it would worry her.  As I said, I don't think that indicates trust issues or hypersensitivity.  To me, it just means she is a girl, and some girls are like that.  I understand a lot of guys would feel cramped by such an attitude.  I do not.

I am aware that, these days, people commonly regard such images as No Big Deal, and that to think otherwise indicates some kind of unhealthy prudery.  I happen to disagree.

None of which will keep me from reading the book one day, when I get around to it.  Maybe when I get it, I'll post on here, and see if anyone needs a new cover for their UC.   =)

The racinessness would be in the mind of my wife, actually.

I had a really stupendous comeback, but I wasn't trying to jack the thread.  Micro, if you'd like to explain how a buxom, topless blond is not racy, we should probably start another thread.
