But... but but but but but but but....!!!!

I thought Lyndon Johnson's BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars poured into Appalachaia solved all of those problems!

You mean throwing enormous sums of money at a problem won't solve it?

I'm SHOCKED! Has anyone informed the new President? I'm sure that he could throw some change at the problem, which is probably about all that's left... loose change.

Those in Appalachia aren't the target demographic of this administration so they won't even get the change.

I imagine they want to remain that way.  Much of the scots irish immigrants moved to appalachia in the 1700s through 1900s to get away from urban America.

Can't say I blame them.

Sometimes, people are monetarily poor, but they still have their pride. They don't want handouts.

That's something liberals can't accept. They treat them like children when they don't want to be spoon-fed.

"but couldn't bring myself to do it without taking away from the message."

Dude...

You posted a snipped from an on-line equivilent of TV Guide.

Not much of a message in that.

Ditto what Mike said.  In addition, the so called poor in that neck of the woods are the wrong color, thus, no money for them.....chris3

I know, I was just tugging your chain. I should have dropped a  in there; my apologies for not doing so and sending the wrong message.

I've seen squatters neighborhoods in South Texas.  Anything from shacks and shantys to mobile homes on blocks.  No electricty no water just a well (if that) and some shacks on the edges of private property.

in the 70's there were areas like that within 6 miles of the whitehouse  as the crow flys.

go out and get the two Dry Branch Fire Squad live albums if you want to understand poverety in Appalachia.

bonus points if you go to a concert and he tells the story about his grandmother surrendering to the war on poverty.

this was an enclave of houses within a quarter mile of the beltway in pg county.  land prices made em go away.

ACORN doesn't operate there.

A lot of people from the mountains are like my Grandma was.  She wouldn't take a free cup of water from someone even if her hair was on fire.  Pride can be foolish sometimes... but still a good lesson there.  Nuthin is free...especially when it comes from the Federal Gov.

Do the folks of Appalachia have enough food to eat, clothes to wear and a roof over their heads?

Dunno. The toothless hillbilly/redneck types in my state do, but they're probably rich by comparison. I tend to think that people cease to be hillbillys when they become welfare bums. If I could only get my hands on the idiotic do-gooder who first thought of welfare.
