Libs always talk about expatriating...
« on: March 01, 2009, 10:15:26 PM »
And we also talk about productive Californians bailing on that sinking ship.

Our fore-fathers, centuries ago, left their homes behind in search of greater freedom in their moral/spiritual/economic lives.

So:  Where's a conservative to go, nowadays?  Consider language a non-barrier and leave firearms aside for the moment, and let's talk about economic Wild West frontiers outside of America's borders with lower taxes and tolerable/lower restrictions on the individual citizen's moral compass or freedom of speech/religion/whatever.

Nominations?

I'd put forward eastern Europe as a possibility.  Since coming out from behind the Iron Curtain, they have savagely embraced Capitalism.  I would argue that they are the real reason of the EU... the decaying painted corpses of Western Europe saw this fresh set of stallion-economies they could harness to their rotting carriage and stave off their own downfall for a few more generations.

A friend of mine went to Poland recently to visit family.  Very conservative fellow, he was singing the praises of the younger generations of Poles there.

I would worry about the EU stifling anything good from becoming permanent, though.

How's Argentina doing nowadays?  Has FerFal written anything after the Argentinian slide from 10 years ago?

I know nothing about New Zealand other than they are a bit xenophobic in their immigration procedures.  Hard to get in.

What other places make good research candidates?

(I'm not advocating jumping ship... I'm just curious what economies or locations in the world can offer opportunies for enterprising people to succeed without being surrounded by a cloud of Socialist filth like we are being forced to breathe here, right now.)

I've heard good things about New Zealand.  Beautiful country, at that.

I don't know, though.  Does it have to be first-world?  How about Honduras?  US dollars go far there.

I've been asking for donations for years to wall off kalifornia from the rest of the country.  Heck, someone just send me enough bricks, I'll start tomorrow.

Well, yea.  Part of the premise AZRedhawk44's set up was to ignore gun laws.

I wish they would go ahead and do it...

Personally, I'm wondering about Finland or maybe CZ?

I dunno, but I've heard that the Philippines is rather lenient on gun laws, at least for their citizens. The dollar used go very far there, too. I haven't checked into the exchange rate lately, but the thought of moving there crossed my mind a couple of years ago.

The Czech republic looks promising.  Flat tax (15%) was adopted in 2007.

Much as I have a love affair with New Zealand and would love to live there again for some period of years (I did live there for one year in high school), I'm not so sure I'd put it on the list the OP was after.  They've cut back quite a bit on their socialist policies, but I would not even begin to describe it as a haven for entrepeneurs, or capitalists in general.  Income tax is relatively high, though it is apparently a very simple system.  If you are employed by someone else (and only have one job), as long as they do the withholding correctly, you don't even have to file your taxes if you don't want to.  They also have a fairly high (12.5%) GST (goods and services tax).

Add that to the fairly restrictive gun laws and I wouldn't emigrate there.  That said, NZ has lax gun laws compared to Oz.  In Oz handguns are totally verboten, and rifles and shotguns are very tightly controlled.  In NZ, it's not easy, but you can legally own a handgun, and it's not nearly as hard to own rifles and shotguns.  AR's or other MSSAs (Military Style Semi-Automatics) are essentially banned.  But, if you have a gun, suppressors are an over-the-counter item.

Met a Czech lady the other day.  I wish I'd taken the time to find out more from about life there.  They certainly have a reputation here of being one of the more free countries in eastern Europe.

I've understood that Finland is rather socially conservative. More than us here atleast. Economically, I'm not quite sure how they are. The Czech republic have rather low taxes, plenty of pretty women, and quite relaxed gun laws.

I know an American missionary currently working in the uglier areas of Indianapolis.  He's apparently thinking of relocating to Latin America.  Honduras, I believe.  He's already got some facility with the language, I'm told.

I'm having a hard time imagining that Honduras could be a better locale than the U.S., at least in his lifetime.

Not totally banned. You can still get one, if you are ready to go through quite a lot of paperwork and such. But yeah, NZ is better than Oz in that regard. Sad really.

A co-worker is planning to move to Belize when she gets her house sold and affairs otherwise in order. It sounds fairly nice, although I've not talked the politics with her.

What about Taiwan? I think even under nominal ChiCom rule Hong Kong is fairly free, isn't it?

Sadly tho, America is only icky-socialist by our own standards. Compared to most other countries we really are a bastion of freedom.

Wasn't Taiwan the place that issued tickets for leaving the toilet seat up, or for guys having long hair?  Or was that Singapore?  It was one of them Asian Tigers, anyway.

Wait a minute.  No long-haired boys?  Sounds like my kind of place.   =)

Isn't it obvious?  Let the liberals save the Earth--we'll go to the Moon!!  We can make our own air, water, and power, and if you won't be productive you have to go back to the heavy gravity hellhole.

The only problem with that is like I'd like to preserve our heritage.

The same dorks who blew up the Buddhas in Afghanistan would wash across the world like a second Mongol Horde, killing kneeling and begging liberals as they go, and blow up everything from the Pyramids to Monticello. Well. They might make the latter into a mosque.

I would rather not see that.

Buy up a bunch of abandoned oil rigs that are in relative close proximity to each other in the international waters of the Gulf of Mexico.  Move out to one of them and then declare them to all be part of a sovereign island nation.
