If you want to leave the US, it seems like you have to choose to go to two ways

Either try to keep your same quality of life, in which you have to move to a more socialist country or try to gain freedom, in which you have to move to an unsafe country (with underdeveloped infrastructure).

Granted I see no point in moving to a more socialist country.

Lets talk about moving to central america, south america, or an island country in the gulf.

Pros - Much more freedom.  Want to start a business? Go ahead.  You can serve food out of a dumpster if you wish. Want to drive like a hole? Well, there aren't any traffic lights/signs so go ahead! Labor is dirt cheap.  Most middle class families have live-in maids, drivers and body guards.  However, standard material goods (cars, dining tables, shoes) are as expensive or more expensive (even with the exchange rate) than they are in the US.  You could live on the beach and the weather is unbeatable!

Cons - Highly dangerous, you'll need those body guards.  You will live in a house in a community with armed guards, your house will be surrounded by a 10 ft fence, and you will lock yourself in behind bars at night. (Gates made of 2 x 2 box steel).  Hospitals don't have clean running water, and neither do you.  The doctors in the maternity ward don't wash up between patients because the last woman
s blood is less risky than the water.  Electricity is unreliable, you'll need a generator.  You'll also need to have water storage.

Oh, don't worry, we just may have a South American Banana Republic here soon enough. =D

And I laughed when Ken Hackathorn told me that we would be a Third World country in 20 years.  Perhaps he should have said 10. =D

So:  Where's a conservative to go, nowadays?  Consider language a non-barrier and leave firearms aside for the moment, and let's talk about economic Wild West frontiers outside of America's borders with lower taxes and tolerable/lower restrictions on the individual citizen's moral compass or freedom of speech/religion/whatever.

Nominations?

I've heard from folks expatriating to rural Mexico.  They say it's a pretty nice place, with friendly people and the culture very much into the live-and-let-live ethic.  There are all sorts of laws, similar to the US in that regard, but nobody bothers to enforce them.  It all works out to be a pretty intrusion-free system.

They say as long as you leave them alone they leave you alone.  If you're involved in government or law enforcement then all bets are off.  But who would want to join a foreign government?

I was under the impression that foreigners can't own land in Mexico.

Is that only on the coast?  I may be mis-remembering that.

Anyone know anything about Micronesian islands?  Are they far enough away from the Muslim extremists in Indonesia?  What are laws like in Fiji/Roratonga/Cook Islands?

And when the local cops want to shake you down for funds?

I hear Peru is nice.  Good food, good gun laws, cheap...

And now I am a rich man, but I'm still a farmer, too
But I sold my farm in Texas, bought a farm down in Peru
And when get so homesick, I think I'm goin' insane,
I travel back to Texas in a low-flyin' plane...

Local cops are typically pretty good at recognizing where their bread is buttered, especially if you are genuinely friendly and respectful to them and treat your "interactions" as gifts of appreciation instead of outright bribes.

In a country where the locals are usually underpaid, the odd tip or "present for their kids" can go a long way.

Didn't read the whole thread...

I am fairly conservative and I have seriously considered abandoning ship for years.

America is not the whole world. The world will survive without Americans.

When I hit the lottery, I'm off like a prom dress.  Purchase a Caribbean island somewhere, bribe the officials to leave me alone.
