Sk8er boy wanna show off for buddies? Fine. He should rapidly learn to choose a better way.

Are they on drugs maybe? PCP? Meth? Personally, just to be safe, I'd advocate whackin' him back with a baton or sap, but that's just me. Taser would be just fine too. If someone, even in their low teens, walks up and hits me, well, I'm an old fat man... If I get in a fight, I'm going to be hurtin' for certain, maybe with debilitating long term injuries, or even dead. I'm going to use everything in my power to either get away, or take down my assailant. And take them down hard, so that I don't have to worry about a second try.

Fisty,

I'll take this one from a LE perspective.

Personally, I'd have had the taser ready to go because if the little @&%*er was willing and ready to throw a flying sucker punch out of nowhere, why would he stop at just one hit?

That's without understanding the motives for him doing so, and/or whatever response he was hoping to get out of his fellow gaggle there.  Was it an invitation for a free-for-all once he initiated it?  Was it done on a dare?  What were the details of the dare?  1, 2, 3 punches, or maybe a kick in the groin as the flag for more actors to join?

There's an old saying, "Never bring a knife to a gun fight."  Sucker-punch me, and I may not shoot you (nor should I unless I think the attack is bad enough on my person to warrant it), but you'll certainly know you won't get a second chance, and you'll definitely know you've been subdued and apprehended for that wonderful little display of Darwin's Finest Rule.

I was hoping for some taser action :(

Was I the only one to read that as tongue-in-cheek?  Seriously, folks.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

Ah yes. Those who bemoan big government tyranny are suggesting the cops should do whatever they like to stupid kids...especially if it includes tasers.
Lots of double speak at APS these days.
The only reason I return is that some of you have a sense of logic. The rest are the very disturbing indeed.

We don't have that function in the Simple Machines software.

The staff is working on the sysadmin and owner to upgrade to software that will. ;)

Any indication why?  Was the kid normal looking, scumbag looking or crazy looking?

Running up and punching anyone that is armed without any cause should considered Darwin baiting.

I am really offended by this post. Rather than ask if the kid is normal looking or crazy looking or scumbag looking, I think you need to consider the upbringing of this youngster. After almost 24 years as a street cop, I would never have such thoughts. I am trying to determine what I have done personally to cause this misdirected youth to lash out at society in an anti social manner.

Please try to be as open minded and liberal thinking as I am. After all, in this new era of hope and change, perhaps we can all hope for a future free of such narrow minded thinking, and change to be more accepting of this young man's divergent view of organized society.

If any non normal, scumbag, or crazy reader thinks this is a serious opinion and takes me to task for it, please review the definition of sarcasm.

One day, when this young man is about to turn his life around, he will be gunned down by trigger-happy cops who should have peacefully shot the gun out of his hands.  Seems like they don't teach that simple maneuver in cop school anymore.

I was actually taught that technique, however my handicap is that I am a lousy shot. When I was assigned to the Horse Unit, I always went to the broad side of the barn to practice prior to qualifications.

Don't feel too bad. A buddy of mine at Infantry School would've been better off being inside the barn while trying to hit the broad side of it.

If I ran up and socked a cop for no good reason I'd wanna be in jail.

man the beating that woulda got me would still be scabbing  and it was mom that woulda delivered it. great example of why i couldn't be a cop.  the kid woulda rode the lightening.  i suspect he was too stupid to learn much but some of his friends might wise up from seeing that
It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

I'm still holding out for an explanation as to why I'm now a sadist....

I can live with being a latent sociopath, but a SADIST? come on..   Kid had the Taser coming, and got off easy.

Thing is, I remember a mellower time... You could let your kids out to play, they could walk -miles- home from school, safely, and you could leave your cars and homes unlocked.

Of course, back in that time, the dreaded concept of "street justice" often reared its ugly head.

IMHO, the kids probably egged the one kid on, because they KNEW nothing overly nasty would happen to him. And now he's a big man among his peers.

In 1973, if some kid had tried that in my home town, when he got out of the hospital, he'd be washing the jail floors...

You know, had the police officer tased (tasered?) the kid and the liberals came to criticize that, people'd be condeming them for second-guessing a police officer because they weren't there. Yet here people are also second-guessing a police officer. He was there, and decided he was not being seriously attacked and this didn't warrant a tasing. Maybe he did it for a reason?

As the resident card carrying ACLU member (at least one taht admits it) as well as one that gets really bent out of shape when cops abuse their authority in the slightest little bit...

...I'd be right there with many other folks waiting to see the kid taken down forcefully and/or tazered.

Those entrusted to help assure our safety shouldn't get a free pass, but they also shouldn't be expected to take any more physical abuse than the rest of us, either.

I don't think anyone is harshing on the cop for not beating his ass: they are just saying if he had it would've been ok.

Yet here people are also second-guessing a police officer.

First of all, who is second-guessing him?  Where?

Secondly, there is second-guessing and there is second-guessing.  Not all second-guessings are created equal.
