Acorn & the census??
« on: May 07, 2009, 09:47:38 PM »
How much am I required by law to tell a census taker?? Cause I'm gonna blast 'em (verbally that is!!) about being members of ACORN, leftist terrorist spies, etc. and only tell them what I absolutely have to!!!!!!!!!

Stay safe, and calm.

Well, there's no law against being forgetful, is there?

I don't think you should call 'em leftist evil zombies. You should be the ultimate red. You need to tell them that they're just not "down with the struggle." Ask them the last time they burned down a recruiter's house, dumped sugar in a cop's gas tank, threw butyric acid at an NRA meeting...

Depending on which form you get, you are minimally required to tell them the name and  birthdate of every person residing full-time in the dwelling at the time the census-taker arrives.

As of the last census, there was consternation over the requirement, based on repeated visits by the census-taker and explanations that yes, you can in fact be jailed for refusing to provide the information, to disclose not only how many flush toilets, garbage disposals, TV sets, computers, telephones, blowdryers, pets (deliniated by species and possibly by breeding/non-breeding status) and numerous other things were inside your dwelling unit, as well as how much money (within a range)  you earned, spent on food, gas, electricity, porn or other areas of life.

See  http://www.census.gov/acs/www/  and http://www.census.gov/epct/mso/household_surveys/004005.html for starters.  The real answer is:

American Community Survey: Must I respond?

  Question
Do I have to respond to the American Community Survey / Puerto Rico Community Survey?

  Answer
Yes. Respondents are required to answer all questions on the American Community Survey (ACS) to the best of their ability. Response to this and other Census surveys is required by law (Section 221 of Title 13, Chapter 7, United States Code). This chapter also contains information regarding offenses and possible penalties.

Heh.  I've tossed a "census" questionnaire a couple of times in the past year or so.  Then a about two weeks ago a lady from the census bureau showed up at my door.  I was thinking, "*expletive deleted*it, I'm busted," and wondering how long it was going to take to answer all her questions (they usually try to get your answers in person before attempting to arrest you, or so I've heard), until she told me she was trying to get a hold of my next door neighbors, and was wondering if I knew when they might be home.   =D

I scared the *expletive deleted*it out of a census worker the other week. They were going around and verifying addresses. I don't think he was ACORN. He was a pale, pasty white dude...

I wonder if they will make it illegal to ask a census worker if they ae affiliated with ACORN. Maybe hey could call it hate speech.

Not only is not illegal, your local PD will tell you that it is good safety practice to verify the credentials of anyone coming to your door that you have not scheduled to be there.

Imagine the fun of having the ACORNian holding their census credentials up to the totally useless peephole, then telling them to sip it through the mail slot.  Even if they keep it on their neckcord you could yank it a few times. =D

Then try to find the right phone number to verify the identity of a census worker!  'Cause as we all learned, we NEVER use the phone number they give us, because it's probably either Bubba's cell or their babymomma's corner payphone.

When you cannot get verification, call 911 and report a possible attempted home invasion.  Heck, for all you know it could really be one, right?

This could be more fun that comparing GPS readings with the front-door verifiers that are currently our crisscrossing the country.  A reading that's off by a few seconds could mean reports that you are in fact either living on your front lawn or literally in the street.  Try to reconcile being homeless with the fact that you have a McMansion just a few seconds of angle away, or vice versa.

stay safe.

Last time around, I got the long form.  =(

Does .gov REALLY need to know what time I leave for work and what time I come home?

I just wrote the number of people living in my home in the space provided and returned the form with the rest blank. Haven't heard back in 9 years.

While I don't advocate jerking census personnel around for entertainment, verify who they are.   It could be a census worker, it could be a criminal casing a neighborhood.

If you get the bad vibes, call 911 and explain the situation clearly with your concerns.

Apparently, we are dealing with two separate things this time around- the Census and the American Community Survey.

It appears the new 2010 questionnaire will have 10 questions on it. Not bad compared to the long form last time around.

Census forms will be mailed to most addresses next March, and workers will go door-to-door on some American Indian reservations. The forms include only 10 questions and ask for names, gender, age, race, ethnicity, relationships and whether the occupants own the home. The information is based on residents of each home as of April 1, 2010.

The reason they have decided to only ask 10 questions is because Washington has decided that they need a different system to compile your information. They are charging forward with a plan called the American Community Survey. That will be done yearly. That's the survey that will ask all of the pesky question some folks object to answering. The American Community Survey is a plan created in 1995. It will be fully implemented in 2010.

Unfortunately, the American Community Survey will be conducted under the aegis of the census laws.  You will answer the intrusive questions or face incarceration and fines - presuming they find you and find out that you willfully refused to answer.

Amazingly, I see a TIA in my future, resulting in transitory illiteracy.
