Texting Teen falls into Sewer
« on: July 11, 2009, 02:27:27 PM »

NEW YORK (CBS) ―
It was an accident waiting to happen -- an open sewer and a 15-year-old girl who was texting while she walked.

Alexa Longueira, a high school sophomore, was walking along Victory Boulevard near Travis Avenue on Staten Island Wednesday evening when she felt the earth move and was plunged into smelly darkness.

She said the manhole she fell in to was left open and unattended with no warning signs or orange cones. She said two workers with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection failed to secure the area as they prepared to flush the sewer.

"It was just really gross and it was shocking and scary," she said. "Because of their careless mistake I got hurt."

Longueira has deep cuts and bruises and said she now has nightmares about falling, but she also did admit she was texting at the time.

"Regardless of whether I'm texting or not if there was a cone there I'm gong to see a big orange cone," she said. "I walk that sidewalk every day, I don't expect a big hole there."

Longueira said she was helped out of the five-foot deep sewer by an apologetic DEP worker.

She went to the hospital and the city opened an investigation, issuing the following statement:

"We regret that this happened and wish the young woman a speedy recovery."

The Longueira family wants more than get well wishes. They may sue. Alexa's mother, Kim, said: "It could have been an elderly person, a mother pushing a stroller. It could have been anyone."

Alexa lost one of her sneakers in the sewer. She does not want it back.

The girl's mother said Alexa will see more doctors next week to get an MRI and check for damage to her spine.

It says wednesday evening, which at this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere should mean there was enough light still to see perfectly well.

In conclusion:
a) The workers should have 'coned it'.
b) The girl should look where she is bloody well going.

While undergoing the MRI docs should do a quick check for a brain.

It seems a few pads were temporarily installed as a publicity stunt.

First thought when I read the thread title was "Did she die?"

How did I know it was a girl?

That's interesting.  My first thought was

I find it hard to believe that she would have seen a big orange cone, but she didn't see the big black hole in the sidewalk.  If they would have coned it, she would have tripped over the cone and fallen in head first and been killed.  She should thank them for leaving it unmarked.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Natural selection is at work here. Stupidity is not a trait which aids in survival. It hinders it.

I think in this particular case, $#!+ for brains would be particularly apt.

This is the result of the ongoing circumventing of natural selection.
Ignorane should hurt.
Stupidity should be painful.
Gross stupidity should be crippleing.
Monumental stupidity should be fatal.

Society protects stupid people and allows them to breed. Stupid people breed uncontrolled like raddits and pass on the stupid gene to increasingly larger generatiopns of stupid offspring and the cycle continues.

Smart people on the other hand do things to protect the stupid people and they control their reproduciton to a sustainable level.

This cycle has continued to the point that stupid people have reached the point that they out number smart people.

I suspect that the point of balance has tipped in favor of stupid people and smart people will soon become a thing of the past. Shortly there after stupid people will become extinct becasue there is no one around to print up new warning labels to tell stupid people what not to do.

And it will be Bush's fault.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Smart people need to breed like rabbits as a defensive measure to increase their voting bloc.
