Anyone who listens to WJFK in Washington, DC...
« on: July 15, 2009, 11:40:13 AM »
Especially the Big O and Dukes or Mike O'Meara shows...

JFK is going all sports talk in a few days and those shows are being booted.

I've been listening to WJFK every workday for nearly 15 years.

The format change claims to be for a "sports" format, but from what I can tell it's sport, singular. It's going to be the Washington Redskinsblowjobarama station. Nothing on basketball, baseball, hockey, or soccer.

Radio in Washington DC is already horrid, and this makes it every so very much worse.

Unfortunately it's impossible to get in my office.

They have things on our computers locked down so tight that it's not even funny.

I use a small stereo, iPod and Podcasts.  Our Internet is locked down pretty tight as well.

This does come at the perfect time, as I just bought a 4 Gig Sansa Clip and have been loading it with lots and lots of goodies.

Still, I'm really rather ticked that one of my favorite shows is going away.

The building I'm in is a huge Faraday cage. Radio reception, with a few exceptions, is spotty. Cell phone reception is terrible.

I had some issues early on with loading music onto it, but now that I have it down it's seamless.

I love the thing. About the size of a Zippo lighter.

I want to get some noise canceling ear buds or small head phones, though, as my office environment can get kind of heavy on the background noise at times.

I listened to Don and Mike every day on my way to work when I first moved down here.

Then WAVA was sold to a Christian broadcasting network, they clamped down on what D&M could do (basically nothing) but refused to let them out of their contract.

I forget how that finally worked out, but IIRC Don and Mike staged an on-air revolt that had them reading from the newspaper or some such. WAVA caved fairly quickly, and they eventually moved to WJFK.

God, I HATED when Don left radio, now Mike is going off the air.

Literally there's not going to be anything talk related that is even remotely worht listening to in this area in the afternoons now.

DC radio just sucks! It's horrific!

Bad news is I hear it every day from either the Wall or DSOtM

The Don & Mike Christmas show was the best

You remember Maurice Butkis?

Maurice doing the commentary for the Gay Olympics (of course it was Mike O'Meara doing the voice) was responsible for me nearly taking out the statue at Scott Circle on Rhode Island Avenue in Washington one morning. I was laughing so hard I was crying and couldn't see anything in front of me.

★ 'The Hamburger James Story': A "Don and Mike" holiday tradition. On the last show before Christmas/New Year's break every year, Charly Stuangstabalac [Mike] comes into the studio to hear Don read the touching story of Hamburger James, a low-level member of Elvis Presley's "Memphis Mafia" who is caught stealing money from Elvis' "kit" of drugs and cash; he is bitterly remorseful and Elvis forgives him.

Oh, Tuttle, you forget...

My Mother lives in Lewistown. At least you have the advantages of the University.

Lewistown doesn't have squat.

Lewistown has primers! My dad bought some small rifle primers there last week.

It's a leftist conspiracy to take over talk radio, that last bastion of conservative talk. If they go leftist talk format, (remember Air America?) nobody will tune in. But if they go sports, half the useful idiots will listen in the mistaken belief they're learning something useful.

Probably Dan Pierce's Outdoor Shop. It's run by the sons now, but Dan has been a friend of the family for many years. Their prices are kind of high on most things, unfortunately.

Lewistown is one hell of an ugly town. It's an ugly old mill town dropped right in the middle of some of the most beautiful landscape I've ever seen. But I've always found it to be oddly compelling. One side or the other of my family has been associated with the town for nearly all of its history. My parents both grew up there, and I've always loved the house where my Dad grew up, and where Mom lives now. I lived and worked there for awhile.

But, radio there sucks. And the gunshop has high prices. :)

I wouldn't exactly call any of the shows they're airing right now political in any sense of the word. The Junkies are more sports-oriented talk (which is why their show is staying), and Big O and Dukes and Mike O'Meara are both general talk radio.

Mifflin County Sheriff has never given me a lick of problems getting my out of state permit. Of course he knew my Grandfather, my Father, and me...

I drink lots of different brews, I used to be a big strab's fan
and I have been known to consume Mickey's big mouths,
tall toady 33s, and last week i enjoyed a dead guy ale on tap in SC

Fun thing about State College is the bars have about 37 beers on tap
