My most significant donation annually is to the Salvation Army. I've mentioned the reason in previous threads. While working on the Alaska Air Flight 261 disaster, the Salvation Army just blew me away. There were a number of relief agencies there, but the only time you saw the SA was when you needed them. They were always there to lend a hand, keep everyone fed, and console people dealing with nothing but body parts. The rest of the time they just blended in. Other relief agencies there, like the Red Cross, though helping out, were also practically running a donation campaign while they were there. The dignified response of the SA sold me on them.
I have the option to give to the SA via the Combined Federal Campaign, but don't out of principle. My particular office of the agency I work for not only hounds us about the CFC, but has a non-profit Foundation that they push us to give to that only benefits my agency (but it's "for the environment!" ). I find that extremely tacky, plus I already pay Federal taxes.
I'm also an NRA Endowment Member and donate a bit too the NRA/ILA. I also donate a small amount beyond dues to Ducks Unlimited.
