[censored] scanner...
« on: July 28, 2009, 10:01:27 PM »
So I've got an HP (or as my dad likes to call them, Hewlett Crappard) flatbed scanner.  4570c, to be exact.

Last night, went to scan some photos I took.  Turn the scanner on, hit the scan button.   Hrm.  no blinding white light from under the lid...

*fidget*

*adjust*

*twiddle*

Try again...  Still no light....

Hrm.....  Google-fu some tips for hardware tests....

*test*

*test again*

*test one more time*

$#)*@....  Lamp is burned out....  Maybe I can replace the bulb.....

Gee, imagine that, HP doesn't exactly make this thing user-serviceable.  I'd need to do some serious solder jockeying to try to replace it.

So I guess I'm in the market for a new scanner.

Any suggestions?  Looking for a decent grade flatbed scanner that can also do slides/negatives...

I've got a Canon CanoScan 8600F that I'm quite happy with.  I've never done negatives with it, but I have done slides, and they came out quite nice.

is the 8600F both a "regular" (i.e. printed materials on paper) scanner as well as a transparency scanner?  I tried to look it up on the website and the only info I could get was the film/negative scanner info on it.

I just bought an Epson V500.  It should arrive today or tomorrow.  It got the best reviews I could find on the net.  I will let you know how it does.....chris3

Scanners are pretty old tech.

I'd go to a goodwill and pick one up there for like $5.

I have one similar to this: http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/882735/Lexmark-X5650-Color-Inkjet-All-In/ only mine is wireless. I like it pretty well. The biggest problem is that one can't have the Lexmark cartridges refilled without the software nagging at them and that the inkjet cartridges from Lexmark are a little spendy. I don't know if it will copy negatives or slides because I don't have those any more. My camera is all digital.

Yup.  They show up at garage sales regularly around here.

Got a Canon LIDE something or other that way, linux supported, usb powered, for a buck.
