Over here, employment isn't a right; it's a privilege.  And to do things that make your employer look like a bumbling redneck bafoon?  Great way to get the axe.  Taking pictures of a cute waitress with your issue weapon the back of the squad car after having a few beers shows poor judgement.  We're not talking about private pictures on a private vehicle here.
Personally, were I the Sherrif, I'd probably have charged them with misuse of county property or some such other charge.

If they are off duty, why would they still be using county property?

I believe some departments let their officers take their duty weapons and vehicles home.

You'd think "don't get drunk and let non-cops play with your guns" would be a pre-req for that sort of program.

Seems like it.  You seem to be arguing that doing something wantonly stupid on the job shouldn't jeopardize your continued employment.

You'd think "don't get drunk and let non-cops play with your guns" would be a pre-req for that sort of program.
It may not have been a pre-requirement, but it certainly prove to be a "continue-requirement".

Pretty much.  You're saying they shouldn't have been fired (and, only one was fired) for getting drunk and letting a non cop play with their guns, on their squad car.

Conduct unbecoming.  Acting unprofessional for a little piece of tail.  I'd have probably lopped some heads off, too.

Excuse me....my "pot-kettle" detector is ringing....

Back now....should the LEO's involved have received some type of punishment for this?  Absolutely yes.  But why should it be a firing offense?

Is there any profession in which getting drunk and misusing company property, then causing massive embarassment for your organization qon't get you fired? Sheriff's are elected, so this can actually hurt his chances of re-election. Make your boss worried about keeping his job, and you get fired. Seems pretty damn simple to me.
