Most convincing artificial accents in the movies
« on: August 28, 2009, 12:06:35 AM »
I always think it's the true test of acting when someone can put on a real convincing accent. Probably really bad accents slip by me if I'm not a native of that accent, because I wouldn't know the difference. For example, I might not notice if an actor had a bad Australian accent. But Peter Sellers' American accent in Dr. Strangelove was perfectly transparent to me and I understand that Collin Ferrel's American accent is faked. That's impressive. What actors have the ability to put on great accents, and what roles showcase this ability to a high degree?

Not in the movies, but I am very impressed at Hugh Laurie's American accent in House.

My friends in New Zealand said that Anthony Hopkins absoultly nailed the Southland (Invercargill) accent in "Worlds Fastest Indian".  I used to be able to tell regions of New Zealand apart, and the Aussie accent vs New Zealand accent used to be a slam dunk for me.  Not so much anymore as I haven't spent enough time there lately.

This. Hearing him speak in his normal voice is a shocker.

The guy who plays Winters in Band of Brothers.  I had no idea he wasn't American until watching the Behind the Scenes.

Half the cast of Blackhawk Down.  :O

Ewan MacGregor and Albert Finney in Big Fish.

FULLY agreed re: Hugh Laurie...  =)

But, how about David Tennant in Doctor Who? He's got a very thick Scottish accent that he entirely hides behind a northern English accent. To me, at least, that's impressive.

Oh, quite right. MacGregor was so dang good in that one I forgot he had an accent to begin with!

Holy Crap!  I never noticed he was in the movie and I've watched it 3 times.

Also agree with House.  Every time I hear him outside that role, it makes me do a doubletake.

I always thought Mel Gibson did a good American accent.  I can't comment too much on his Scottish, as I have never been to Scotland, but it seemed alright to me.

Not many do a decent English accent, but Gwyneth Paltrow does well.

You don't call us Pom's do you. Limeys is your preferred term. Aussies call us Poms.

I usually use the term "socialist". :P

Kidding, "Brit" generally suffices.

Holy crap.  He's English.  Never seen him in anything that didn't have him speaking with an American accent.  Oh wait, he was in something last year and I heard his regular accent in the trailer and I thought he was doing a really bad English accent.  Oops.
Oh, Lord, please let me be as sanctimonious and self-righteous as those around me, so that I may fit in.

Bob Hoskins in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Not having seen him in anything prior, it was so convincing that I thought his accent in Shattered was him acting. It was actually his normal speaking voice!

Australia!  Australia!  Australia!

Here's Bruce, he's from Pommieland doing a very convincing Australian accent:

Not a movie, but Jamie Bamber (British) did a credible American accent as Lee Adama in Battlestar Galactica.

And a second vote for Michael Caine in Secondhand Lions.
