$399 buys you a new, builder grade, 80% gas furnace - shipped.

http://www.alpinehomeair.com/viewcategory.cfm?categoryID=470

After doing some research, these appear the be the Carrier 58STX/58STA models, only without the branding.

I know, right?

It still didn't keep me from ordering one, though.  =D

I've wanted to replace the old Fedders for quite some time.

Damn, that's a great deal. Too bad I'm in an apartment for a while longer. :(

There is also the brand Crown, Not a bad unit. Built in America also (does Philadelphia count as America?)

I assume you either have a very small home, live in Florida, or connections with the local quick stop oil change establishments. Am I correct? I can't imagine one or two cars going through nearly enough oil in a few months to heat a house during one of our long winters. You don't happen to own a construction company or anything?

So, this would work in place of the ancient 50% efficient at best unit in my basement at present??  How many BTU would you figure for a <2000 square house?

I based my calculations off several factors:

1. What a heating contractor recommended.
2. The current unit.

I have a unit I estimate at 60%, and has an input heat of 140k btu's.
So, effectively, my house was getting 84k btu's.

These furnaces are 80%.  84000/ 0.80 = 105kbtus.  I selected the 110k unit.

Also, what part of the country do you live in?

That raises an interesting question. How burdensome IS the environmental regulation for an oil change shop to dispose of their used oil by giving it away? I am sure they have to pay to have it hauled away and recycled.

That said anybody in the DFW area that has an interest in #6 fuel oil p.m. me.

I don't think there is any regulation, as long as they don't dump it down the drain. Some places use it to heat the shop. I think most places sell it to recycling companies, though I doubt they make much profit. If they had to pay to dispose of it auto parts stores wouldn't take used oil for free. The petroleum companies recycle it into more crankcase oil.

As for giving it away I doubt they would unless they were isolated enough that shipping cost too much and they didn't have an oil burning furnace.

Let the neighbors know you'll take all their used oil for free, and watch how quickly your tank fills up.

You have neighbors that change their own oil?  I'm the only one on my street that does.  Speaking of which, I have about 30qts that need to go to Autozone for recycling.

The story I've heard is that auto parts places do indeed have to pay to get rid of used oil.  They are required by law to take used oil in (for free) if they sell new oil and filters.  This is an environmental act to discourage people from pouring used oil down the drain.  Now, I don't know how true that is - I haven't researched it, but it certainly makes sense.

The whole oil burning thing was brought up because the company I work was giving away 300 gallons of used oil to anyone who wanted it.  I was considering using it to heat my home this winter.

Looks like you could use a new water heater as well.  Looks like you have flame outside the tank judging from the burn patern around the pilot access.

Yea, the access plate was missing when we bought the house.  :|

I recently found it behind the furnace.  I'm hoping this will keep hot combustion gases from rolling out.   :O

Damn, can't believe it really is a Carrier. What's the model # on it? There should be another logo tag in there somewhere that you have to swap out for the Carrier tag. I bought Vryant a few weeks ago, got a Carrier furnace and I said, "Hey! This isn't a Bryant!" so the guy hands me a Bryant tag and says, "Here you go!"

My supplier just quoted me $942. That's wholesale cost to me, the dealer. He BELIEVES the ones at Alpine came from a business that went under. Either that or they're hot, and I don't mean from heat:laugh:

I'll presume it's the former.

Interesting info, thanks for inquiring about that.  It's nice confirmation that yes, this is a killer deal!  =D

heh heh heh,,,nothing like listening to your supplier's local rep cough and sputter while he tries to come up with a good excuse.

He says the same thing, someone must have gone out and sold off their inventory for next to nothing.
