IT Favor Requested
« on: October 22, 2009, 03:42:32 PM »
I need someone to tell me the following:

Given a hardware/software environment of:
-64-bit VT-x enabled Intel processor(s)
-ginormous RAM (hence the 64-bit CPU above)
-64-bit OS, either WinXP 64bit or Windows 7
-Microsoft Virtual Server

Can you:
-Install a Windows 7 VM (or a dozen) inside of Virtual Server, AND
-Run Windows XP compatibility mode inside of that Windows 7 VM?

Windows XP mode of Windows 7 requires Intel VT-x or AMD's equivalent to be present and enabled in the bios of the computer.  Do VM's allow for Intel VT-x to pass through from the host hardware?

If no one can say, I'll test on my home PC.  It's a tri-core AMD with virtualization, but it'll take me a dozen forevers to set up Win7, Virtual Server, then Win7 again inside the VM.  Just hoping someone else already has Win7 virtualized inside of a VT-x capable computer and can run XP mode in that.

I'll say yes.

Of course, I don't have any qualifications to answer that question, but that's what the internet is for, right?
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

lol... yeah.

There's a lot of VM fans here and I figured someone must have a decent VM host box with VT-x on it and running Win7 in it.  From there it's only a matter of turning on XP mode.

If not... then I'll be the sucker who loads software for 86 hours after buying yet another hard drive. =D

I'll say yes, but I think the new MSVM download that's being offered right now is a release candidate version and not yet 100% finalized.
I promise not to duck.

I don't think you can, the built in windows 7 XP mode requires hardware virtualization support from the host os.  A virtualized 7 does not have that.

Oh? Please elaborate. That may be important for something I'm thinking about.

Nothing in there about VT-x being available for use in a VM environment for a VM'ed Win7 to run WinXP mode though.

FWIW I've been playing with and/or actively using virtualization for close to 12 years professionly. If you are going to run more than one or two VM's you need to run a low level bare hardware solution. Check out VMWare's ESXi solution you can get a free license for it now. That said Microsofts virtualization solutions do work, but i've always had better luck with VMWare; Virtual Box; or even parallels. You might even want to look at a Zen solution though I haven't had the best luck myself with it. I gave up on Zen at one point was happy enough with VMWare.

OK, I'm about to find out...sort of.

My host OS is WinXP 64-bit running VS 2005R2.  I've got Win7 loaded up in it and I'm installing VM Additions into it right now.  VM Additions installed cleanly, so that's good at least.  Right?

So:  I need to use this WinXP compatibility mode stuff.  I guess I need an app that doesn't run on Win7 but does on XP.  Anyone got a pointer to one?

Holy Schneikie!

AMD-V and Intel VT-x pass thru to the guest OS!!11!eleventy!

havdetectiontool.exe:

Screenshot of Win7 passing the havdetectiontool.exe while running as a VM, on WinXP 64-bit and VS 2005R2.

I will now be getting the XP mode download package and trying it out.  :-)

Running XP in Win 7 inside XP. Keep us posted.

I was thinking about running Win 7 in Ubuntu in Win 7 just to see if the world would end the same way it does when you google google. =D

Why not?....what's the worst that can happen?.....and, if you need any tech support, just ask for fistful....
